The University of California, Merced women's soccer team is out to prove a point to the Cal Pac Conference. For the second time in as many games, the Bobcats didn't give up a single shot in a dominating home victory. Thursday's victims were the La Sierra University Golden Eagles, whom UC Merced defeated 8-0.
Veronica Villacorta was this week's hat trick hero for UC Merced, finding the back of the net three times in the victory. Niccole Salm scored twice while Bennett, Daisy Bonilla, and Miranda Thomas all got on the scoresheet. Elizabeth Cruz had a pair of assists in the first half, and was joined by Katerina Rocker Heppe, Shelby Devlin, Thomas, and Ashley Bennett in the assist category.
The Bobcats found the net three times in the first half, led by a pair from Villacorta. The second half, while a bit slower to start, ended up being filled with even more fireworks. The Bobcats struck five times in the final 45 minutes, including four times between the 72nd and 77th minute.
In that time frame, Villacorta got the third goal of her hat trick, Salm scored two goals within a minute, and Thomas scored what is easily the goal of the season so far when she blasted one into the top left corner from 35 yards out.
With the victory, and the lack of opponent shots, the Bobcats have now not only shutout their last two opponents, but given up an astonishing zero total shots in doing so.
The Bobcats on the other hand had no problem finding their shots, ripping 57 of them, including 34 of them on net.
UC Merced will enjoy a brief break before taking the field again on Saturday. They'll welcome Marymount California University for a 1:00 kickoff.
