Box Score ANGWIN, Calif. - Juan Flores became the program's all-time assists leader and then scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to help the University of California, Merced men's soccer team earn a 3-2 comeback win over Pacific Union College on Sunday afternoon.
Flores tallied five points overall on the day to keep the Bobcats (6-2, 3-0) undefeated in California Pacific Conference play. This marks the sixth consecutive year the Bobcats are unbeaten through three conference games.
The Bobcats also overcame a 2-0 deficit to earn Sunday's win, their largest comeback victory since September 18, 2014.
Flores, the 2020 Cal Pac Player of the Year and a Honorable Mention All-American, is now the program's all-time assists leader with 30 career assists. Artemio Contreras (2015-18) held the previous record.
His record-breaking assist came in the 53rd minute, playing a ball inside the 18-yard box to Jesus Enriquez for the Bobcats first goal of the match. Enriquez had to take just one touch before grounding his right-footed shot into the far corner of the net. Enriquez's goal was his fourth of the year. Cristian Gaona also earned an assist on the play, his second of the campaign.
Flores netted the equalizer in the 69th minute off a set piece. Positioned just in front of the penalty stripe, he received the ball from Marcos Ceballos and after taking a touch to settle, spun 90 degrees and then beat the diving keeper to his right. The score extended Flores' Cal Pac goal scoring streak to three games and he has now scored a goal in six of the last seven conference games dating back to last season. Ceballos' assist was his second in as many games.
The game-winning goal in the 85th minute came after a flurry of Bobcat touches. Michael De La Cruz sent a long ball in and it was Andres Lua to gain control and get the Bobcats inside the 18-yard box. Four consecutive passes set up a Rosas shot that was blocked by a Pioneers center back. Ceballos got to the soccer ball first after the deflection and played it to Roberto Ceja, who then fired a shot that Pioneers goalkeeper Miguel Cervantes made a diving stab at.
Flores was there for the rebound and his one-timer crossed the face of the net and was buried into the far corner for the score. It was the Bobcats latest game-winning goal in regulation since Esteven Salgado and the Bobcats won at Simpson in the 87th minute on November 5, 2016. It was also Flores' second game-winning goal of the season and second multi-goal game of the season.
Ceja earned his third assist in his last four games.
The Bobcats have now scored at least three goals in six of their eight games this year.
Head coach Albert Martins' team outshot PUC 17-11, 10-3 on goal. The Bobcats lost the corner kick count for just the second time this season, 7-4.
Lua and Flores shared match-high with four shots. Pacific Union's Issay Bravo also had four shots and had both Pioneer goals. His first came off a corner kick in the 21st minute to put his team up 1-0. It was the Pioneers first ever goal against the Bobcats in the 12-game series that dates back to 2013. Bravo doubled the Pioneers lead five minutes later.
The two-goal deficit was followed by the Bobcats second biggest comeback win in program history.
UC Merced is now 12-0 all-time against the Pioneers.
22 total fouls were whistled in the match, 10 on the Bobcats. The Bobcats were also issued three yellow cards.
Ricky Rosas played in his 77th career game, breaking the program's all-time record previously held by Contreras.
Looking ahead, UC Merced continues their three-game road trip at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday, October 15. First touch from Varsity Field in Prescott, Ariz., is scheduled for 7:30pm.
