Box Score MESA, Ariz. - Marcos Ceballos scored in the ninth minute and the University of California, Merced men's soccer team shutout Benedictine University at Mesa 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game road trip.
The Bobcats (7-3, 3-0) shutout was their third of the year and all three have come on the road. Head coach Albert Martins' squad has at least three road shutouts in five consecutive seasons.
Brycen Miller was in the net for the Bobcats to earn his first career shutout and became the sixth Bobcat in program history to accomplish that feat. Miller's shutout comes in his sixth career start. The Fresno, Calif., native was tasked with three saves, two in the second half.
Ceballos' game-winning goal in the early stages of the contest was assisted by Cristian Gaona. Two of Ceballos' four goals this year have stood as the game-winner. The two GWG's are tied for the team lead and tied for third in the California Pacific Conference.
Gaona's assist was his second on the three-game road trip and third assist on the year.
The Bobcats outshot BenU Mesa 24-14 in the win, but both teams had just three shots on goal.
All three of the Bobcats shots on target came off the foot of Ceballos. He held match-high with eight shots overall, one short of his career-high set in 2019.
Andres Lua and Juan Flores each recorded four shots. Lua has got off at least three shots in five straight games and is currently second in the conference with 43 total shots.
Gaona took two shots, while five other Bobcats notched one apiece.
The Bobcats busiest offensive stretch came in the first 20 minutes as they got off seven of their 24 shots, including two of their three shots on goal and the ninth minute Ceballos score.
UC Merced's best opportunities to add an insurance goal came late in the match, including a Lua shot that banged off the crossbar in the 80th minute.
Other notables include earning two corner kicks while limiting BenU Mesa to zero. It was the Bobcats third time this year not allowing an opponent corner kick.
20 fouls were whistled against UC Merced and three cautions were issued.
Brian Lua earned his first career start.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats return home to host Cal Maritime for Senior Night on Friday, October 22. First touch from Bobcat Field is scheduled for 7:30pm.
Following the game, the Bobcats will be presented with their 2020 California Pacific Conference Championship rings in an on-field ceremony.
