Bobcats Beat Cal Maritime 9-0 on Senior Night

Box Score

MERCED, Calif. - Seven Bobcats found the back of the net and the University of California, Merced men's soccer team routed Cal Maritime 9-0 on Bobcat Field Friday night.

The Bobcats (8-3, 4-0) nine goal advantage was their biggest since beating Pacific Union College 9-0 on October 28, 2018. Both games were Senior Night's. The most recent 9-0 win also came on the same night the 2020 team was presented their California Pacific Conference Tournament Championship rings.

Marcos Ceballos and Jesus Enriquez scored two goals each against the Keelhaulers and Ceballos' goal in the eighth minute stood as the game-winning goal. The Bobcats are now 4-0 in Cal Pac play for the second straight season.

Ceballos' game-winning goal was his second in as many games and it came after the Bobcats strung together 13 consecutive passes, ultimately ending with a through ball to Ceballos inside the 18-yard box. Bryan Ayala delivered the through ball for his first career assist.

Ceballos doubled the Bobcats lead less than five minutes later off an assist from Luis Villegas. Friday night marked Ceballos' first multi-goal game of the season and seventh of his career.

Roberto Ceja (15') and Kevin Capetillo (36') both scored leading up to intermission and the Bobcats 4-0 lead at the half was their biggest after 45 minutes of play since November 9, 2019. Ceja's goal was his fifth of the year, Capetillo's was his first.

The Bobcats kept the pressure on in the second half and got two goals from Enriquez and a goal each from Andres Lua, Ricky Rosas and Juan Flores. One of many notables from this group of goal scorers is Enriquez notching his second multi-goal game of the season which is tied with Flores for the team lead.

Flores' goal was his eighth of the season and he becomes the third player in program history with at least eight goals in four different seasons. He joins the likes of Artemio Contreras and Cody Golbad.

Both Lua and Rosas moved up the program's all-time scoring lists with their goals. Lua passed Marcus DeCouto for fifth in program history with 66 career points, while Rosas is now ninth all-time passing David Esparza with 48 points.

Capetillo was credited with a career-high three assists in the second half, the tenth Bobcat all-time with a three-assist match.

Brian Lua assisted Rosas' goal in the 89th minute for his first career assist. A week ago, B. Lua earned his first career start.

Ceja, Flores and Cristian Gaona also notched an assist in the big win.

The Bobcats outshot Cal Maritime 52-2 on the night, 27-1 on goal. It was the Bobcats most total shots since taking 64 against the Keelhaulers on October 29, 2016. The Bobcats also won the corner kick battle 8-1.

Lua held match-high with eight shots, Flores and Ceballos got off six each.

Brycen Miller and Alberto Gutierrez combined for the Bobcats second straight shutout and fourth of the season. Miller earned his fifth straight start.

Gutierrez made his first career save, the tenth player in program history to do so.

Looking ahead, UC Merced hosts Sierra Nevada University at Bobcat Field on Friday, October 29 at 3:30pm.
