Box Score MERCED, Calif. - Roberto Ceja and Bryan Ayala recorded their first career hat-tricks and the University of California, Merced men's soccer team tied the program's single-game scoring record in a 16-1 win over Pacific Union College on Friday afternoon in the regular season home finale.
While the Bobcats (10-4, 6-1) tied the program's single-game scoring record that was originally set on October 26, 2017 at Cal Maritime, head coach Albert Martins's squad broke the record with 17 assists.
Ceja and Ayala led the Bobcats with a hat-trick and an assist each. Marcos Ceballos had two goals, while Andres Lua and Juan Flores each shared match with three assists.
Ceja and Ayala are the tenth and eleventh players in program history with a hat-trick, the seventh and eighth players with a seven-point match.
The duo each completed their hat-trick in the final ten minutes of the game. Ceja's first goal in the 13th minute stood as the game-winning goal. His next two goals came in the 58th and 80th minute.
Ayala scored all three of his goals in the final ten minutes of play, including his final score with 67 seconds left in regulation.
The Bobcats scored eight goals in each half. Cristian Gaona got the Bobcats on the board first in the tenth minute as he followed a Lua shot for his first career goal.
The Bobcats other first half goal scorers were Ceja (13'), Lua (14'), Michael De La Cruz (16'), Ceballos (21' & 34'), Flores (38') and Andres Alonso (42').
Aside from Ayala's three scores and Ceja's two in the second half, Kevin Capetillo, Nikolas Komatina and Jonathon Rodriguez also found the back of the net late in the game.
Multiple Bobcats either moved up the program record books, set a new career-high, or scored for the first time in their career.
Lua's three assist and one goal performance allowed him to pass Brian Chongtoua for fourth in program history with 73 career points. Ceballos' two goals and an assist puts him ahead of Marcus DeCouto for sixth place with 68 career points.
Rosas and Capetillo moved up the program record books in the assists category. Rosas is now sixth with 19 career assists, while Capetillo, who had a pair on Friday, is ninth with 15 total assists.
Flores' goal in the 38th minute was his career-best tenth of the season, becoming the sixth Bobcat in program history with double figure goals.
Gaona, Alonso, Rodriguez and Komatina scored their first career goal. Komatina was also credited with his first career assist on the final goal of the day.
Other notables include a career-best two assists from Xavier Barajas and an assist each from De La Cruz and Luis Villegas.
UC Merced outshot Pacific Union 42-2 and took six corner kicks while holding the Pioneers without one.
29 of the Bobcats 42 shots were on target, tying the program-record set vs. Cal Maritime on September 27, 2018.
Lua and Capetillo held match-high with six shots each.
Marco Sobrevilla and Brycen Miller split time between the posts for the Bobcats. Sobrevilla stopped his first shot attempt in his return from an injury that kept him out for a month.
UC Merced is now 13-0 all-time against Pacific Union. Friday's 16-1 win was the second double figure win against the Pioneers and the largest in the 13-game series.
Looking ahead, UC Merced visits Cal Maritime in the regular season finale on Sunday, November 7. First touch from Bodnar Field in Vallejo, Calif., is scheduled for 3:30pm.
