Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Freshman Jesus Enriquez scored twice and the University of California, Merced men's soccer team shutout The Master's University 4-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (3-1) shutout was the first of the season, while the four-goal output tied this year's single-season high.
Enriquez was joined in the goal scoring column by Roberto Ceja and Ricky Rosas. Marco Sobrevilla and Brycen Miller combined for the shutout.
Ceja's goal in the third minute stood as the game-winning goal, his second game-winner of the season and fourth goal overall. The Merced, Calif., native took advantage of an empty net and fired one in from ten yards out. Ceja initially started the offensive sequence by intercepting a short goal kick. Kevin Capetillo was also there providing pressure, which forced the keeper to come well outside his goal box.
Enriquez began his career-day after checking in at the 30 minute mark. Shortly after, he found himself sprinting down the sidelines and was able to control a long ball from Omar Martinez that resulted in a goal. It was his first career goal and the first assist of the season for Martinez. Martinez was on the other side of the center line while sending in the ball.
The Bobcats carried the 2-0 lead into intermission and outshot The Master's 6-2 in the first 45 minutes. One of the two Mustangs shots went off the crossbar. Sobrevilla did not have to make a save in his time on the field.
Martinez delivered another stellar ball to Enriquez early in the second half but this time Enriquez was fouled from behind resulting in a penalty kick. Rosas elected to take the penalty kick in the 58th minute. Although the Bobcats first PK of the season was saved by the Mustangs Kian Benson, Rosas earned another trip back to the stripe as a violation was called against the defense.
Rosas converted the second time around to put the Bobcats up 3-0. Rosas' goal was his second in as many games and with it he moved into ninth on the program's all-time list with 14 career goals. He is also now tied with David Esparza for ninth all-time with 46 career points.
The Bobcats final goal of the afternoon came off a set piece and Enriquez finished it off with a highlight reel bicycle kick goal in the 74th minute. Jimmy Lorenti took the kick from 25 yards out and initially connected with Joshua Golka, who then headed it to Enriquez closer to the goal.
Enriquez managed to pull off the bicycle kick despite a defender draped right over him.
Enriquez is the third Bobcat with a multi-goal game this year, joining Ceja and Juan Flores.
Golka's assist was his second of the season, Lorenti's was his first.
Overall, the Bobcats outshot The Master's 17-4 and 7-1 on target. The lone Master's shot on target came in the 63rd minute. The Bobcats have outshot two of their four opponents by double figures and both instances have resulted in wins.
Rosas and Enriquez shared match-high with three shots.
The Bobcats also won the corner kick battle 5-2 on Saturday and forced TMU into 18 fouls. The officials issued six yellow cards, four Bobcats were booked.
UC Merced improves to 4-1 all-time against The Master's University.
