Westlake Makes History, Bobcats Down BenU Mesa in Double Overtime

Box Score

CHANDLER, Ariz. - In a game in which Mason Westlake became the California Pacific Conference's all-time three-point record holder, the University of California, Merced men's basketball team knocked off Benedictine University Mesa 93-91 in double overtime on Saturday night inside the Coyote Center.

Westlake's historical triple came in the second half. It was his 200th career three-point field goal, besting the previous record held by Menlo College's Julian Harris (2007-2011). The three-point record was the conference's longest standing scoring record.

Records piled up the rest of the night, both individually and as a team.

The Bobcats double-overtime game was just the second in program history and head coach Kevin Pham's team's 93 points was the most ever in a Cal Pac game. The scoring output one-upped the Bobcats 92 in last year's season opener.

Tiler Fears was key in the record-breaking performance and led five Bobcats in double figures with a career-high 24 points off the bench. Fears shot 64% (7-11) from the floor en route to his best offensive showing. The sophomore also sunk eight of eleven free throws, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked a shot.

Westlake's historical triple was part of a 17-point night overall. As well as becoming the conference's all-time three-point record holder, Westlake moved up on a pair of program all-time record charts. He passed Cole Taira for third all-time with 827 career points, while passing Jonah Cottrell for seventh all-time with 104 career assists.

Kingsley Obiorah had 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. With his rim-protecting performance, Obiorah became UC Merced's all-time blocks leader with 69 career blocked shots. Obiorah broke Aaron Laflin's record, who blocked 67 shots from 2015-19.

Jayson Wiltz and Robert Benson rounded out the Bobcats five double figure scorers. Wiltz poured in 15 points to extend his double figure scoring streak to four games, while Benson pitched in a career-high ten points while finishing 67% (4-6) from the field.

Onkar Sidhu and Georgie Nze each pitched in six points and a steal. Sidhu also grabbed seven rebounds. DeDrick Martin blocked his first career shot.

The longest Cal Pac game in program history saw both teams force an extra period. BenU Mesa forced the first overtime period after Stevie James tied the game 77-77 with a buzzer-beating three-pointer. Fears forced the second overtime by sinking two free throws to pull even with BenU Mesa at 88-88. Following the free throws, the Bobcats were forced to get a stop defensively and were successful in doing so.

The Bobcats also had to make a defensive stand in the second overtime period. Leading 93-91 with 13 seconds left after a Fears free throw, BenU Mesa elected to go for the win but Jay Small couldn't connect on a three-ball and Fears grabbed the miss as time expired to secure the Bobcats second straight tightly contested game and third straight road win overall.

The Bobcats have won both double overtime games in program history, the first being in the 2018 Cal Pac Semifinal at Cal Maritime.

Prior to the overtime periods on Saturday night, both the Bobcats and Redhawks held double figure leads. The Bobcats led by as many as 13 points at 24-11 midway through the first half. However, the Bobcats trailed 33-31 at intermission.

BenU Mesa's biggest lead of the night was 12 points, first coming at 51-39 early in the second half. The Bobcats cut the deficit to five points with just under ten minutes remaining, but then were staring at another 12-point deficit trailing 62-50 with under eight to go.

The Bobcats responded with a 13-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to take the lead, 63-62. Obiorah had six of the Bobcats 13 points during the surge.

Later on, the Bobcats led 77-71 with the shot clock off, but BenU Mesa's Maurice Walton converted a three-point play the hard way and then immediately forced a turnover and James buried a three-ball to complete a miraculous six-point comeback to force overtime.

Walton and James were two of five Redhawks in double figures with 23 and 15 points, respectively. Walton finished with 14 rebounds for his third double-double in league play.

Both teams finished the night shooting 48% from the floor and committed just nine turnovers in the 50 minutes of action. The Bobcats cashed in 33 of their 69 field goal attempts. The Bobcats were also efficient from the charity stripe, hitting 24 of 32 (75%).

Never an easy road trip, this year marks the first time in program history that the Bobcats beat both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Benedictine University Mesa on the road.

Up next, UC Merced looks for a three-game Arizona road trip sweep when they take on first-time opponent Park University - Gilbert on Sunday, January 30. Tipoff from the PHHacility in Phoenix, Ariz., is scheduled for 6:00pm PST.
