Bobcats Battle Back to Earn 2-2 Draw at Park Gilbert

Box Score

MESA, Ariz. - The University of California, Merced men's soccer team came back from a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 draw at Park University Gilbert on Saturday afternoon and remain unbeaten in California Pacific Conference play.

The Bobcats (5-1-4, 2-0-3) are unbeaten through five Cal Pac games for the third consecutive year.

Andres Lua and Kevin Capetillo each scored an equalizer for the Bobcats to keep the impressive streak alive. Lua scored in the first half and Capetillo's goal occured in the 69th minute and was the games final score.

Lua's goal to tie the game 1-1 in the 28th minute was his eleventh goal of the season, making him the first Bobcat in program history to score eleven goals in the first ten games of the season. Lua is also currently one of just nine players in the nation with eleven goals this year.

Capetillo was credited with the assist on Lua's goal, his Cal Pac leading sixth assist of the season.

Park Gilbert scored before the half and the Bobcats trailed 2-1 at intermission.

Capetillo's response to the deficit came directly off a free kick in the 69th minute. His equalizer from 20 yards out was his fourth goal of the year, second in as many games off a free kick in the second half.

Head coach Albert Martins' team outshot the Bucs 4-1 the rest of the way and earned three corner kicks in search of the game-winning goal.

Overall, UC Merced outshot the opponent 22-8 on the afternoon and won the corner kick battle 8-2. Lua held match-high with five shots, while Omar Garcia recorded four. Jesus Ponce put three shots on target.

The Bucs Jerry Backstrom, who leads the Cal Pac in saves, stopped eleven shots on the afternoon. Despite that, the Bobcats are one of just two Cal Pac teams to score two or more goals against Backstrom this year.

Marco Sobrevilla had two saves for the Bobcats. Sobrevilla's start was the 50th of his career.

Saturday afternoon's match was the first ever meeting between the Bobcats and the Buccaneers.

Looking ahead, the Bobcats return home to play Soka University of America on Saturday, October 8. First touch is scheduled for 3:00pm on Bobcat Field.
