Box Score MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced men's soccer team scored two first half goals and beat Soka University of America 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to open up a four-match homestand on Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats (6-1-4, 3-0-3) are now unbeaten in ten consecutive matches, their second 10+ match unbeaten streak in the last five seasons.
The win also keeps the Bobcats as one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in California Pacific Conference play.
Anthoni Martin and Jesus Enriquez each scored their first goals of the season for the Bobcats in Saturday's victory.
Martin scored first for the Bobcats and his goal was the quickest this season coming just 63 seconds in. Martin intercepted a pass from Soka's back line and after a touch, buried a right-footed shot from approximately 25 yards.
Head coach Albert Martins' team peppered Soka with eleven more shots and six corner kicks in the first half alone, and doubled their lead in the 43rd minute with Enriquez's goal.
Enriquez's goal stood as the game-winning goal. Omar Garcia and Diego Fresquez earned assists on the score, connecting passes to set up Enriquez with a clean shot from the corner of the goal box. Fresquez's assist was his first of the season, Garcia's second.
The Bobcats held a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Soka cut the deficit in half with their lone goal from Jesus Cabrera in the 49th minute.
Kevin Capetillo, Andres Lua and Michael De La Cruz all took shots at getting that goal back for the Bobcats in the next 15 minutes, but two shots were saved and one was just wide left.
Only two total shots, one from each team, were recorded the rest of the game.
The Bobcats outshot Soka 16-3 overall on the day, 10-2 on target. The three shots allowed were the Bobcats fewest shots allowed all season.
Capetillo held match-high with six shots, four on goal. Lua and Enriquez each put two shots on frame.
Marco Sobrevilla made one save in the win.
The Bobcats have won six straight games against Soka. Soka is now the fifth different Cal Pac opponent the Bobcats have an active six-match winning streak over.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats welcome Providence Christian College to Bobcat Field for a 7:00pm kickoff on Thursday, October 13.
