Quiroz Scores Tenth Goal of Season But Upset Bid Falls Short Against ERAU

Box Score

MERCED, Calif. - Trinidad Quiroz and the University of California, Merced women's soccer team snapped Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's 13-match shutout streak, but came up short in the upset bid and fell 2-1 to the 17th-ranked Eagles (13-1-1, 10-0) on Senior Day Saturday morning at Bobcat Field.

The Bobcats (6-4-2, 5-3) are the first team to score against the Eagles since August 23 and Quiroz's score came in the 80th minute cutting the deficit in half.

Quiroz's goal, a half volley from the top of the 18-yard box, was her tenth of the year. Quiroz becomes the sixth Bobcat in program history with 10+ goals in a single season, but just the third to do so in her first season in a UC Merced uniform joining top goal scorers Claudia Diaz and Jenn Salinger.

Vanessa Raygoza earned her first assist of the season on the score.

Embry-Riddle scored their two goals in a 13-minute window in the second half, with the eventual game-winning goal coming in the 73rd minute off the foot of Aubrie Labno.

UC Merced and Embry-Riddle both put six shots on frame. Embry-Riddle outshot the Bobcats 12-9 overall, but the Bobcats won the corner kick battle 4-1.

Quiroz and Raygoza each put two shots on frame, one each in the first and second half to force the Eagles keeper into one of her busiest afternoons of the season. Jocelyne Garcia and Kylee Silva also recorded a shot on goal.

UC Merced had a last-ditch effort to force a draw with a free kick from about 35 yards out with four seconds left, but the Eagles headed it out as time expired.

Seniors Veronica Vasquez, Maddie Door and Zoe Juarez earned their first starts of the season. Vasquez started between the posts and finished with three saves.

All ten UC Merced seniors were announced in the starting lineup following the Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.

Looking ahead, UC Merced will host Simpson University in the regular season home finale on Thursday, October 20. First touch from Bobcat Field is scheduled for 5:00pm.
