Box Score MERCED, Calif. - Kevin Capetillo scored two second half goals and Marco Sobrevilla anchored a stout defense as the University of California, Merced men's soccer team shutout Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 2-0 in a battle of the Cal Pac's unbeatens on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats (8-1-4, 5-0-3), now the final unbeaten team remaining in Cal Pac play, have also tied their overall program record from 2018 with a 12-match unbeaten streak.
Furthermore, the Bobcats are unbeaten in a program-record 15 straight home games dating back to last season.
Capetillo's multi-goal game was the first of his career and he brought his goal total up to six on the year.
Capetillo scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute directly off a free kick from 20 yards out. Just off-centered, Capetillo buried his shot near post.
The Oakland, Calif., native doubled the Bobcats advantage in the 76th minute, one-timing an Andres Lua ground ball cross into the back of the net. Lua's assist was his fourth of the season and 19th of his career, putting him ahead Marcus DeCouto and into a tie with Ricky Rosas for seventh on the program's all-time assists list. Omar Garcia was also credited with an assist on the goal, sending the long ball ahead to Lua from the center line down to the end line. Garcia's assist was his third in his freshman campaign.
UC Merced outshot Embry-Riddle 13-4 on the afternoon, 10-3 on target. UC Merced also had six corner kicks and held the Eagles without a single corner. Lua and Capetillo took three shots each and combined for five on frame. Diego Fresquez put two shots on target in a strong offensive stretch that was followed eight minutes later by the Bobcats first goal.
Defensively, UC Merced was the first team to shutout Embry-Riddle this season and it was the first time the Eagles were shutout in any Cal Pac game since the Bobcats held them without a goal back on September 29, 2019.
Making the shutout more impressive, Embry-Riddle entered Saturday's contest ranked second in the nation with 56 total goals.
Sobrevilla's shutout was his third of the season, his second in Cal Pac play. Sobrevilla made three saves in the win.
Defenders Michael De La Cruz and Agustin Guerrero played all 90 minutes with Sobrevilla in the shutout.
Lua played 78 minutes and when he took Bobcat Field to start the game, he passed Juan Flores for the second most appearances in program history with 81 career games played.
Up next, UC Merced will host Simpson University for Senior Night on Thursday, October 20. First touch in the regular season home finale is scheduled for 7:00pm on Bobcat Field. A Senior Night ceremony will take place prior to the game.
