Box Score MERCED, Calif. - Andres Lua broke the University of California, Merced men's soccer all-time goals record in a 2-0 win over Simpson University on Senior Night in front of a capacity crowd Thursday at Bobcat Field.
Lua's record-breaking 49th career goal also stood as the game-winner in the historical match. The Le Grand, Calif., native entered the night tied with Cody Golbad and Artemio Contreras for the most goals in program history and set the new record on the same night the Bobcats (9-1-4, 6-0-3) set a new program record with a 13-match unbeaten streak.
The Bobcats 13-match unbeaten streak bests the previous record set in 2018. Head coach Albert Martins' squad also finished out the regular season home slate unbeaten for the second time in the last three years.
Lua scored the historical goal in the 67th minute from a straightaway position 15 yards out, one-timing an Omar Garcia pass between a pair of Simpson defenders and past the diving keeper. Lua's goal was his 15th of the season.
Garcia doubled the Bobcats lead ten minutes later off an assist from Marcos Ceballos. A through ball from Ernesto Velasquez down to Ceballos drew Simpson's goalkeeper well off his line, and Ceballos then connected with Garcia who blasted his shot into the back of an empty net. Garcia now has six goals and four assists in his freshman campaign. Ceballos was credited with his second assist in the last three games.
Marco Sobrevilla secured the win from there, making two of his six total saves in the closing minutes to preserve the shutout. Sobrevilla's shutout was the eleventh of his career and his six saves made him the program's all-time saves leader, passing Heriberto Diaz with 151 career saves. Sobrevilla is now the program's all-time leader in all six major goalkeeping statistical categories.
UC Merced outshot Simpson 15-9 on the night, 9-6 on goal. UC Merced also earned four corner kicks, while Simpson recorded three corners.
Lua put all three of his shots on target. Kevin Capetillo and Garcia each took two shots on goal.
UC Merced improved to 13-1 all-time against Simpson, including a perfect 9-0 at home. The Bobcats 13 wins are tied for most against any single opponent in program history.
Up next, UC Merced will play at University of Antelope Valley on Saturday, October 22 in Lancaster, Calif. First touch from the Lancaster National Soccer Center is scheduled for 1:30pm.
