Box Score ANGWIN, Calif. - Marcos Ceballos scored twice to lead the University of California, Merced men's soccer team to a 3-1 road win over Pacific Union College on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Bobcats (10-1-5, 7-0-4) extend their program-long unbeaten streak to 15 matches and remain unbeaten in Cal Pac play with just one game remaining.
Ceballos scored a goal in each half, while Andres Lua extended the Bobcats lead midway through the second half on a penalty kick. Lua was also credited with an assist in the win.
Ceballos opened the game's scoring in the 26th minute as he followed a Lua bicycle kick shot that was initially saved by the Pioneers goalkeeper. The ball, that bounced off the diving keepers hand on Lua's shot, ended up just outside the corner of the goal box where Ceballos was able to get to it and blast a shot into the back of the net. Ceballos' goal was his second of the season.
Lua's assist was his fifth of the season and 20th of his career, moving him into a tie with David Esparza for sixth on the program's all-time assists list.
PUC netted an equalizer just over two minutes later and the two teams went into intermission tied 1-1.
Ceballos netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from Anthoni Martin. Martin was on the receiving end of a PUC clear attempt, and then immediately served the ball back into the box and Ceballos played it nicely and into the back of the net. Ceballos' brace was his first multi-goal game of the season and the tenth multi-goal game of his career. Martin's assist was his fourth of the season.
Lua finished the game's scoring and extended the Bobcats lead to 3-1 with a successful penalty kick in the 68th minute for his 16th goal of the season.
Overall, the Bobcats outshot PUC 9-5 on the afternoon and put all nine of its shots on goal. Ceballos recorded four shots on goal, while Lua and Jesus Enriquez got off three and two shots on goal, respectively.
Marco Sobrevilla stopped three shots in his 90 minutes between the posts, including two in the final five minutes to secure the multi-goal win.
The 3-1 win over Pacific Union College improved the Bobcats to 14-0 all-time against the Pioneers. The fourteen wins are the most against any one opponent in program history.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats have one regular season game remaining and can clinch the second seed and a first round bye in the upcoming California Pacific Conference Tournament Championships with a win at Cal Maritime on Saturday, October 29.
First touch at Cal Maritime in Vallejo, Calif., is scheduled for 3:30pm.
