Bobcats Advance to Cal Pac Semifinals With 4-0 Shutout Over Pacific Union

Box Score

MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's soccer team tied its postseason scoring record and shutout Pacific Union College 4-0 in the California Pacific Conference Opening Round on Saturday night at Bobcat Field.

The Bobcats (10-5-3) have now won a postseason game in five straight years, setting a new record among all active teams in the California Pacific Conference.

While UC Merced's four goals tied their top postseason mark, the four-goal final victory margin was the biggest in program history. The Bobcats shutout was their second in postseason history.

Trinity Dunbar, Kaeley Cariglio, Trinidad Quiroz, and Jocelyne Garcia scored the Bobcats goals in the squad's first home playoff game since 2017. Jadyn Gong earned the shutout and recorded six saves in her first career postseason action. Quiroz also had an assist to become the Bobcats first ever player with both a goal and an assist in a Cal Pac Tournament match.

Dunbar's successful penalty kick in the third minute stood as the game-winning goal. The Bobcats elected to send Dunbar to the stripe after Jennavieve Ordonez was fouled from behind immediately after entering the 18-yard box. Dunbar buried her penalty shot near the right post.

Cariglio doubled the Bobcats lead just over ten minutes later off a rebound from an Ordonez shot. Cariglio became the second freshman in program history with a postseason goal, joining Emily Burnett from 2017. Ordonez was credited with the assist, the program's third ever freshman to record a postseason assist.

Quiroz, the Cal Pac's leading goal scorer with 17 goals entering the day, picked up right where she left off in the regular season and extended the Bobcats lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute. Quiroz was on the receiving end of passes from Lilly Boucher and Hannah DeLay that covered nearly the entire length of the field leading her into the corner of the 18-yard box. Quiroz then took a few touches, worked around a defender, and beat the diving keeper with a ground ball shot. DeLay joins Ordonez as one of just four UC Merced freshmen with a postseason assist.

The Bobcats scored three goals in a postseason half for the first time in program history.

Garcia capped the scoring in the 70th minute by one-timing Quiroz's ground ball cross into the back of the net. An impressive scoring play, Quiroz was bumped by two defenders running down the endline, stayed on her feet, then managed to get by them and play it to Garcia in the center of the goal box.

Garcia's goal was the third in her postseason career, her eighth of the season. Qurioz's assist was her seventh on the campaign.

UC Merced outshot Pacific Union College 19-7 in the big win, 11-1 in the second half. The Bobcats put 13 of their 19 total shots on frame. Quiroz tallied three shots on goal, while Garcia and DeLay recorded two each.

Gong stopped all six shots she was challenged with to secure the Bobcats second ever postseason shutout and ninth shutout this season. She started her night with a diving save in the opening five minutes and also left her feet and made two more impressive saves in the closing minutes in the first half. Gong joins Ally Lozano as the only other Bobcat in program history with a playoff shutout.

Up next, the Bobcats will take on the top seed and regular-season champion Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Thursday, November 10 in the California Pacific Conference Semifinals. Kickoff time will be announced here on Sunday evening.
