Box Score IRVINE, Calif. - Jocelyne Garcia scored in the first half and Katy Flores recorded her first career goal but it wasn't enough as the University of California, Merced women's soccer team fell 3-2 to Westcliff University on Friday night in the first ever meeting between these two teams.
The Bobcats (2-2-2) now have eight different goal scorers through the first six games of the season, a feat that has been accomplished four of the last five years attesting to the consistent depth of the Bobcats roster.
A back and forth match saw both teams net a go-ahead goal and an equalizer, but ultimately it was Westcliff's goal in the 72nd minute that stood as the game-winner.
Both teams took 12 shots and earned a corner kick. Garcia shared match-high with four shots.
Two of Garcia's shots came in the first half, including her second shot which resulted in the game's first goal during a counter attack. Trinidad Quiroz was key in setting up the goal, dribbling approximately 50 yards down the middle of the field before playing it to an unmarked Garcia just before the 18-yard box. Garcia took a touch, then let loose and beat the diving keeper.
Garcia's goal in the 29th minute was the 23rd of her career, putting her in a three-way tie with Daisy Bonilla and D Covarrubias for the fourth most in program history.
Shots were hard to come by the remainder of the half and the Bobcats carried the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Although the Bobcats had an early opportunity in the second half, Westcliff's keeper made a save and then found herself in a tie game after watching her offense find the back of the net two minutes later on the first touch immediately following a throw-in.
Westcliff then converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to take a 2-1 lead.
Flores netted her first career goal and the equalizer 30 seconds later. Positioned at the start of the attacking third, Flores kicked the soccer ball forward directly off a pass and her kick shot up into the sky, then took a big bounce in front of the goal, over the keepers head, and into the back of the net.
Tied 2-2, Garcia nearly put the Bobcats ahead in the 70th minute after turning and firing but the Warriors keeper made a diving stop on the line drive shot.
Westcliff's game-winning goal came in the 72nd minute as Sebelle Rojas won the scramble and scored after following her teammates shot that hit the crossbar.
The Bobcats took three shots at an equalizer, but two went wide and the final shot was saved by the Warriors keeper.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats visit University of Saint Katherine on Sunday, September 18. First touch is scheduled for 10:00am at Big Horse Ranch in Temecula, Calif.
