Box Score PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The University of California, Merced men's basketball team won their second game in as many nights with a 70-55 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday night inside the ERAU Activity Center.
The Bobcats (14-6, 10-4) led by double figures for the final 12 minutes of the game and by as many as 20 points midway through the second half. The Bobcats ten California Pacific Conference wins marks the most in program history.
Kingsley Obiorah led the Bobcats with 18 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a block. Both his points and rebound totals marked the second highest output in his career. With his efforts, Obiorah notched his second straight double-double and eighth of the season.
Mason Westlake hit four more triples on 57% (4-7) shooting from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points overall. Westlake, who tied Zavier Lucero for tenth in Cal Pac history with 1,262 career points, also hauled in five rebounds.
Chris Bramah poured in 13 points on 71% (5-7) shooting. Bramah, Westlake, and Obiorah all scored in double figures back-to-back nights.
Tiler Fears pitched in eight points and two assists, while Cameron Brown and Josiah Ajiake scored five points each. DeDrick Martin and Jaron Mertle each hauled in eight rebounds. Georgie Nze dished out three assists.
Overall, the Bobcats 52 total rebounds as a team was their highest mark in a Cal Pac game this season and they outrebounded the opponent 52-34.
Defensively, UC Merced held Embry-Riddle to just a 34% mark from the field and extended their winning streak to eleven games when holding opponents to 55 points or less dating back to the 2019-20 season.
The game had eight lead changes and a scoring margin no larger than four points for the first 14 minutes. The Bobcats changed that with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a Westlake triple to take a 30-23 lead. The Bobcats led from that point on. Westlake would knock down two more three-pointers leading up to intermission, giving the Bobcats a 39-28 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Embry-Riddle was quick to cut the Bobcats lead down to two possessions but Brown made sure to not let the opponent get any closer and scored all five of his points in the next two minutes.
The Bobcats led by ten points, 54-44, with 12 minutes to play and led by double figures the rest of the way.
Head coach Kevin Pham's squad scored ten unanswered after that, doubling their lead to 20 points at 64-44 in just under four minutes. Obiorah had five points in that stretch. Then leading by 18 points a few minutes later, Ajiake knocked down a three to give the Bobcats their biggest lead of the night, 68-47.
Overall, UC Merced finished the contest shooting 44% (27-61) from the floor, 38% (6-16) from downtown, and 56% (10-18) from the foul line. The Bobcats took care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers.
The Bobcats have now won back-to-back years in Prescott and are 5-2 all-time against Embry-Riddle on the road.
Looking ahead, UC Merced will close out a three-game Arizona road trip against Benedictine University Mesa. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00pm PST inside the Coyote Center at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
