Bobcats Fall in Straight Sets to Embry-Riddle

MERCED, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's volleyball team was swept by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 3-0 (25-19, 25-7, 25-17) on Thursday night inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.

Alexa Ultreras and Sera Riley led the Bobcats (10-17, 9-7) with six kills each. Ultreras also had nine digs and a service ace, while Riley notched a solo block.

Bianca Malaluan and Kyra Miller had seven and six assists, respectively. Ellie Gordon finished with five assists.

Other notables include nine digs and a service ace from Destiny Lei Ramilo, five digs from Serena Choi, and a solo block from Semiramis Tanasescu.

Embry-Riddle was led by Katie Rolle's performance of 28 assists, nine digs, seven kills, and four blocks. The Eagles had six different players with at least five kills.

Embry-Riddle led 11-4 in the first set before the Bobcats fought back to pull within three points at the 12-9 mark highlighted by a service ace each from Malaluan and Ultreras. The Bobcats were also within three at 17-14 and were down four at 23-19 before back-to-back errors got the Eagles set point.

Set two was all ERAU as the visitors led by double figures as early as the 13-3 mark and only allowed the Bobcats to score back-to-back points on one occasion throughout the period. Leading 18-6, the Eagles scored five in a row and then after a service error, got right back in rhythm and scored a kill and a block to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Head coach Ai Prachumsri's Bobcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead in third set and forced Embry-Riddle into a timeout. After the timeout, the opponent inched closer and then took a 9-8 lead. UC Merced's last lead was 12-11 before Embry-Riddle took over for good, scoring four in a row and rolling to an 8-2 run overall. Embry-Riddle led 20-13 and the two foes then traded points the rest of the way finishing in a 25-18 set three win for Embry-Riddle to finish off the sweep.
