Bobcats Start 4-0 in Cal Pac Play with an 86-63 Win Over PUC

Box Score

ANGWIN, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's basketball team scored a season-high 86 points on a season-best 53.8% shooting mark to knock off Pacific Union College 86-63 on Friday afternoon and start 4-0 in California Pacific Conference play for the second time in program history.

With another road win, the Bobcats (6-2, 4-0) have now won nine of their last ten Cal Pac road games dating back to last year. Another road note, the Bobcats 86 points are the second most points ever in a non-overtime road game.

Chris Bramah led four Bobcats in double figures with 14 points while splashing two three-pointers and sinking six of his seven foul shots.

Cameron Brown extended his double figure scoring streak to a career-best four games with 12 points on 6-10 shooting. The sophomore also grabbed six rebounds.

Tiler Fears scored eleven points and hit 80% (4-5) of his field goal attempts. Josiah Ajiake added ten points with two three-pointers and four made free throws.

Aidan Sevilla and Jayson Wiltz also connected twice from beyond the arc and combined to shoot 67% (4-6). Blake Hudson and Jaron Mertle pitched in six points. Mertle didn't miss on three field goal attempts.

Eleven different Bobcats made at least one field goal.

Other notables include a season-high seven rebounds from Austin Dewes and a block and a steal from Myles Haynes.

The Bobcats trailed 10-4 five minutes in before Sevilla and Bramah buried a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to pull even. Their two triples started a 12-0 run overall over a three-minute stretch to give the Bobcats a 16-10 lead approaching the midway point of the half.

Tied 21-21 later on, Bramah was fouled on a three-point attempt and he hit all three foul shots to put the Bobcats back on top. The Bobcats followed with a 13-3 half-ending run to hold a 37-24 lead at intermission. The double figure halftime lead marked the second of the season, first since the season opener.

Hudson started the second half with a putback dunk and Brown extended the lead to 17 points with a bucket inside on the next possession. PUC cut the Bobcats advantage down to 12 points before an Ajiake triple made it 46-31 less than four minutes into the frame.

Mertle was responsible for giving the Bobcats their first 20-point lead at 53-33 with 14:10 to play.

Head coach Kevin Pham's team held a lead between 16 and 21 points for the next four minutes before the lead was extended. Up 60-42, the Bobcats used a 10-0 run highlighted by a Wiltz triple and a Dewes three-point play to go up by as many as 28 points at 70-42 just inside of ten minutes.

UC Merced remained in front by at least 20 points the rest of the way with their biggest lead coming at 84-56 following a Fears basket.

Along with the 53.8% shooting mark from the field, the Bobcats shot 40% from beyond the arc and a season-best 80% (16-20) at the foul line.

Looking ahead, UC Merced has close to two weeks off of game action before playing an exhibition game at UC Davis on Thursday, December 21. Tipoff from University Credit Union Center in Davis, Calif., is scheduled for 6:00pm.
