Bobcats Roll Past La Sierra 75-46 to Win Seventh Straight Road Game

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's basketball team continued its winning ways on the road and cruised to a 75-46 victory over La Sierra University on Thursday night inside Alumni Pavilion.

The Bobcats (17-7, 13-5), who extended their program-record road winning streak to seven games, led by as many as 39 points in the win and held host La Sierra to just 26% shooting on the night.

Kingsley Obiorah highlighted the Bobcats victory with 20 points, eight rebounds, a career-high four steals, and three blocks. One game after becoming the California Pacific Conference's all-time blocks leader, Obiorah moved into the league's #10 spot on the rebounding chart and passed George Idehen for second in UC Merced history with 574 total rebounds. Five of Obiorah's eight rebounds on Thursday came on the offensive glass. Also of note, Obiorah shot 70% from the floor in the win and scored 20 or more points for the second time this month.

Josiah Ajiake scored 14 points on 50% (3-6) shooting from beyond the arc, while Mason Westlake and Georgie Nze each hit two triples and pitched in eight and seven points, respectively. Nze also had two steals. Myles Haynes was good for five points.

Freshman point guard Cameron Brown registered a career-high ten rebounds to go along with four points and three assists. Chris Bramah hauled in a season-high eight rebounds.

Other individual notables include four rebounds from Westlake, three assists from Tiler Fears, and two steals from Bramah.

Head coach Kevin Pham's team dominated from the opening jump, scoring on their first seven possessions and holding La Sierra without a field goal for a 12-minute stretch to build a 22-4 lead midway through the opening half.

UC Merced also led by 18 points at 38-20 early in the second half before nearly doubling their lead over the next seven minutes. With the help of Nze and Ajiake, the Bobcats outscored La Sierra 19-5 over the next seven minutes to extend their lead to as many as 32 points. Nze and Ajiake combined for eleven, and the Bobcats bench as a whole combined for 15 of those Bobcats 19 points in the surge that put the game away.

The Bobcats led 64-29 with five minutes to go, while building their lead to a game-high 39 points at 70-31 90 seconds later.

UC Merced finished the night shooting 47% (27-58) from the floor, 27% (7-26) from downtown, and 61% (14-23) at the charity stripe. The Bobcats limited La Sierra to just 12% (3-26) from three-point land.

Also of note, the Bobcats outrebounded La Sierra 52-23.

With the win, the Bobcats won their fifth straight game while holding opponents under 50 points and their 25th consecutive game when holding opponents to 60 points or less.

Up next, UC Merced will play at University of Antelope Valley on Saturday, February 11 at the Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster, Calif. Tipoff against the 21st-ranked Pioneers is scheduled for 7:30pm.
