MERCED, Calif. – Hope Stokes scored four goals and the University of California, Merced women's water polo team allowed their fewest amount of goals of the season to beat Cal Maritime's club team 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center.
The Bobcats (3-5, 3-0) remained perfect at home and in CWPA Sierra Pacific Division B action with the victory.
Stokes' performance marked her third divisional game with four or more goals and she is up to 15 total goals in league action.
Viviana Luna notched her fifth straight multi-goal game with a pair of scores.
Jacqueline Azevedo and Paula Villalta Valle recorded their first career goals in the win. Miranda Cruz and Kaitlyn Kimmel also scored.
Carlin Rodelo made nine saves in the Bobcats best defensive effort of the campaign.
Cruz opened the games scoring just two minutes into the game with a bounce shot that snuck in the near corner. Cal Maritime answered 20 seconds later, but Stokes broke the 1-1 tie with her first of four goals and the Bobcats led the rest of the game. After the first career goals from Azevedo and Villata Valle, Stokes scored again before the end of the first quarter and the Bobcats led 5-1 after seven minutes of action.
UC Merced's five-goal first quarter was their highest scoring frame of the contest.
Luna added two quick goals to start the second quarter to give the Bobcats a game-high lead at 7-1. While the offense did their part to build their six-goal lead, Rodelo and the Bobcats defense was also stellar and the squad held Cal Maritime without a goal for over ten minutes of game time.
UC Merced would lead 7-2 at halftime and 9-4 after three quarters.
Stokes finalized the games scoring in the final two minutes of regulation with a top shelf goal from two meters.
UC Merced's ten-goal outing was their second double figure goal total of the season.
