Bobcats Start Strong in CWPA Club Tournament

MERCED, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's water polo team won two games on day one of the CWPA Club Sierra Pacific Division "B" Championship, beating Saint Mary's club team 15-4 and UC Davis' club team 8-4.

With the two wins, UC Merced is guaranteed a spot in Sunday's First Place Match.

Hope Stokes powered the Bobcats to both victories as she combined for 13 goals overall, including scoring a program-record seven goals in Saturday's opener against Saint Mary's. Stokes had a hat trick in the first quarter before spreading out her next four goals over the course of the match.

Stokes added six more goals against UC Davis, which is tied for the second highest goals output by a Bobcat this year. She scored the games first goal and then after playing to a 2-2 tie at halftime, Stokes exploded for five second half goals to propel the Bobcats to victory. Stokes also combined for six steals and three assists over the 56 minutes of action across the two contests.

Viviana Luna added five goals overall, notching a hat trick against Saint Mary's and scoring two more against UC Davis to go along with five combined steals and four assists.

While Stokes and Luna made up all the Bobcats goals against UC Davis, three other Bobcats found the back of the net vs. Saint Mary's. Paula Villalta Valle scored twice with Kaitlyn Kimmel and Juliana Torres each scoring one goal.

Goalkeeper Carlin Rodelo had nine saves vs. Saint Mary's and four saves in Saturday's finale.

Head coach Johnny Bega's team never trailed on the day. The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter over Saint Mary's and led by at least six goals for the entire second half. The Bobcats biggest lead was 14-4 with two minutes left.

UC Merced jumped out to a 2-0 lead over UC Davis and then after being tied 2-2 at halftime, scored back-to-back goals and never looked back. The Bobcats led by as many as five goals at 8-3 with just under two minutes to play.

Up next, the Bobcats finish round robin play with UC Santa Cruz on Sunday morning at 9:30am before gearing up for the first place match and the season finale at 1:00pm against an opponent to be determined. All games in the CWPA Club Sierra Pacific Division "B" Championship are played at the Aquatics Center at UC Merced.
