Bobcats Earn 4-0 Shutout at Menlo College for Second Win of 2023

ATHERTON, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's soccer team earned a 4-0 shutout over Menlo College on Thursday afternoon at Wunderlich Field.

The Bobcats (2-1-0) four-goal margin of victory was their largest in the 13-game all-time series against the Oaks. The win also marked their first since 2016 over the opponent.

For the third straight game, Quiroz played a role in every goal the Bobcats scored and she tallied six points with two goals and two assists.

Baleigh Zamudio scored the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute, the first goal of her UC Merced career. She also earned an assist in the second half.

Making her UC Merced debut, Yareli Hernandez capped off games scoring in the 84th minute.

Quiroz, the reigning Cal Pac Offensive Player of the Week, scored her two goals in the 66th and 74th minute.

Quiroz has now scored seven goals in three games. With her latest brace, she moved into sole possession of fifth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 25 career goals.

Junior Jadyn Gong earned her fifth career shutout and was credited with two saves on the day, both coming back-to-back in the 59th minute.

UC Merced outshot the Oaks 16-9, putting ten of their shots on frame. Quiroz had four shots on goal, while five other Bobcats recorded one.

Neither team recorded a shot in the first 16 minutes of action until Ordonez took a shot outside the 18-yard box and hit the crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, the Bobcats strung together eight consecutive passes leading to Zamudio's eventual game-winning goal. Quiroz played Zamudio into the left corner of the box and after a couple touches to create a better opportunity for herself, Zamudio lifted her shot up and over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net.

Similar to the first half, the Bobcats first shot in the second half also hit the crossbar. This time the shot came off the foot of Elisa Garcia, who earned her first career start.

The Bobcats doubled their lead in the 66th minute as Zamudio sent a ball up field that pulled the goalkeeper off her line. The pass was intended for Quiroz and the San Jose, Calif., native got to the ball first and immediately fired her shot into the empty net.

Quiroz scored again in the 74th minute after coming up with a long goal kick and beating the Oaks keeper one-on-one. Quiroz placed her shot into the lower left corner.

Quiroz finished off her day setting up a Hernandez goal. Quiroz took possession of the ball on the Oaks half of the field and dribbled approximately 50 yards to set up Hernandez sprinting towards goal. Hernandez scored from five yards out.

The Bobcats four total goals ties the season-high from the season opener. Dating back to last season, the Bobcats have scored at least four goals in four of their last six games.

Holy Names University transfer Melody Her made her UC Merced debut in Thursday's win.

Looking ahead, the Bobcats will play a pair of scrimmages at Dominican University and Stanislaus State before getting back to regular season action and hosting Academy of Art on Saturday, September 2 at 6:00pm for the home opener on Bobcat Field.
