Six Different Bobcats Score in 7-2 Victory

PASADENA, Calif. – Six different Bobcats scored a goal as the University of California, Merced men's soccer team earned their first Cal Pac win of the season on Saturday morning, dominating Providence Christian College 7-2 at Villa Park Field.

The Bobcats (3-1-2, 1-1) seven total goals scored marked their highest scoring output since October 13, 2022.

Roberto Ceja scored two goals for the Bobcats, while Daniel Borges and Kevin Capetillo each had a three-point outing with a goal and an assist.

Capetillo's assist put him ahead of Brian Chongtoua and Cody Golbad for sole possession of third place in program history with 27 career assists.

Xavier Barajas, Joshua Golka, and Joey Alvarez also scored a goal.

Barajas scored the Bobcats first goal of the day and the first goal of his career in the 19th minute. Borges earned the assist with a groundball cross into the center of the box.

Providence netted an early equalizer off a corner kick five minutes later, but Ceja was quick to put the Bobcats back on top.

Ceja scored two goals within 50 seconds of each other with the first one coming in the 32nd minute from the penalty marker off a Brian Lua assist. His second goal, the eventual game-winning goal, he used an angle near the end line to beat the keeper. Capetillo earned an assist on the score.

With his two goals, Ceja moved ahead of David Esparza and Kevin Quintanilla for tenth in program history with 14 career goals. Ceja's two goals on Saturday were his first two of the season.

Golka extended the Bobcats lead to 4-1 in the 42nd minute as he tapped in a ground ball cross from Thomas Knierieme for goal one and assist one of the season for the duo, respectively.

Just six minutes into the second half, Alvarez kept the Bobcats offense rolling with a left-footed rocket from approximately 30 yards out for an impressive first career goal.

Borges tapped in the Bobcats sixth goal in the 67th minute following a ground ball cross from Saul Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was also credited with the assist on Alvarez's score becoming the first Bobcat this year with a multi-assist match.

Capetillo rounded out the Bobcats scoring a minute later, weaving through a pair of defenders before firing from the top of the box.

Providence netted their second goal in the 63rd minute.

UC Merced outshot Providence Christian College 29-5 in the win and 18-3 on target.

The Bobcats also won the corner kick battle 13-3.

All numbers marked a season-high.

Angel Joaquin and Brycen Miller split time in goal for UC Merced with Joaquin earning his first career start.

UC Merced improved to 8-0 all-time against the Sea Beggars.

Looking ahead, the Bobcats host Westcliff University on Friday, September 15 at 7:00pm on Bobcat Field.
