MERCED, Calif. – Trinidad Quiroz scored her eleventh goal of the year and the University of California, Merced women's soccer team earned their fifth consecutive shutout, knocking off the defending Cal Pac Tournament Champion Westcliff Warriors 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats (6-1, 3-0) five-match shutout streak is the longest since 2016, while the five-match winning streak is the longest since 2020. The Bobcats are now 3-0 in Cal Pac play for the third time in the last four years.
Quiroz, who is tied for first in the nation with her eleven goals, scored in the 66th minute.
The junior received the ball roughly 35 yards away from goal before dribbling past her defender and into the corner of the box. Quiroz then played the ball from her right foot to her left and fired far corner, banking her shot in off the post for the goal.
Quiroz extended her goal scoring to seven consecutive games, tying Emily Burnett from 2018 for the longest goal scoring streak in program history.
Jadyn Gong played all 90 minutes in goal making all three saves she was tasked with. The Merced, Calif., native is up to four solo shutouts on the season and eight in her career. She hasn't allowed a goal in 427 consecutive minutes, marking the fourth longest stretch in program history.
The Bobcats outshot Westcliff 24-6 on the night, the fourth straight contest with 20+ shots and limiting their opponent to six or less. Quiroz recorded six shots. Baleigh Zamudio and Alondra Higareda got of three shots each.
The majority of the Bobcats shots in the first half came from outside of the 18-yard box, including a shot from Higareda in the 27th minute that was saved by the keeper and then hit and went over the crossbar resulting in one of two UC Merced corner kicks in the game.
In the second half, head coach Roman DuChateau's team managed to record the majority of their from inside the box, however Westcliff's defense worked hard and blocked five of them. The first shot on target that got through to the keeper, Quiroz's shot in the 66th minute, resulted in the Bobcats goal.
The Bobcats win was their first in the brief two-game series against Westcliff that got underway a year ago.
The Bobcats are currently one of three 3-0 teams in Cal Pac action along with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Simpson University.
