Women's Volleyball Starts 3-0 in Cal Pac Play

REDDING, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's volleyball team went 3-0 with a pair of sweeps and a five-set win at the California Pacific Conference Jamboree this past weekend at the James M. Grant Center. After the first weekend of conference action, the Bobcats (7-6, 3-0) are the only undefeated team in Cal Pac play.

UC Merced 3, Westcliff 0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-12)

UC Merced 3, Providence 0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-18)

UC Merced 3, La Sierra 2 (21-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-12, 16-14)

This marks the Bobcats second straight season starting conference play with three consecutive wins. The Bobcats win over La Sierra marked head coach Ai Prachumsri's 100th career win, becoming the first coach in program history to hit the milestone marker and just the fourth in UC Merced history across all sports.

Destiny Lei Ramilo played in her 400th career set on Friday and became the program's all-time sets played leader, passing Jaysonna Johnson for the top spot. She also passed Valeria Martinez for second in program history with 1,145 career digs.

UC Merced recorded many season-high's in their successful weekend, including recording a .321 hitting percentage in the Cal Pac opener against Westcliff. A day later against La Sierra, the Bobcats posted season-high's of 61 kills, 60 assists, 76 digs, and 13 blocks. The Bobcats 13 blocks were the team's most since October 29, 2022.

Kyra Miller quarterbacked the Bobcats offense and led all players at the Cal Pac Jamboree with 83 total assists (7.55 A/S). She also totaled 15 digs, seven kills, five blocks, and two service aces across the three matches. The Fresno, Calif., native recorded her third double-double of the season with 33 assists and ten digs against La Sierra.

Outside hitters Sera Riley and Alexa Ultreras turned in a stellar all-around weekend and tallied 33 and 32 kills, respectively.

Riley was the only Cal Pac player with at least 33 kills and 40 digs over the weekend, while Ultreras was the only one with at least 32 kills, nine service aces and six blocks. Both Bobcats turned in kill/dig double-double's against La Sierra. Riley turned in 13 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Ultreras's fifth double-double of the year consisted of a season-high 17 kills and 13 digs.

Middle blockers Morgan Wilson and Semiramis Tanasescu shared jamboree-high with eleven blocks apiece (1.0 B/S) while also combining for 41 kills as a duo. Wilson, who had a career-high eight blocks against La Sierra including five solo blocks, started her conference slate with back-to-back seven kill matches without an error in the two sweeps. Her eight blocks are tied for the 2024 team-high. Wilson also had eight kills against La Sierra and finished with a .528 hitting percentage across the trio of matches.

Tanasescu had at least three blocks in each match including five blocks in the weekend finale. Offensively, she posted 7+ kills and a .500 hitting percentage or better against Westcliff and La Sierra.

Other notables include a career-high eleven kills and a career-high tying six digs for Kennedi Baker against La Sierra, a season-high four service aces for Serena Choi against Westcliff,  and 31 total digs over the weekend for Destiny Lei Ramilo. Lei Ramilo had 10+ digs twice, while also recording four aces against La Sierra. Also against La Sierra, Ellie Gordon had a season-high 17 assists and Jazmine Banks tied her career-high with three service aces.

Notable runs and set figures in the Cal Pac Jamboree:

Set One vs. Westcliff:

-          UC Merced opened up the Cal Pac Jamboree with an 8-0 run with Choi behind the service line

-          Ultreras ended the opening set with a 10-0 service run

-          UC Merced hit .500 in the frame

Set Two vs. Westcliff:

-          Prachumsri's squad limited Westcliff to just four kills and a -.154 hitting percentage

Set Three vs. Westcliff

-          The Bobcats scored the first six points and finished the sweep with an 11-3 match-ending run

-          UC Merced held Westcliff to a -.172 hitting percentage

Set One vs. Providence Christian College:

-          11-0 UC Merced run midway through the opening set with Jaide Davis serving

-          The Bobcats hit .435 over the entire set, holding PCC to -.241

Set Two vs. Providence Christian College:

-          Put together a 12-1 run with Ultreras and Lei Ramilo serving  

Set One vs. La Sierra

-          Prachumsri's squad opened the match on a 14-4 run and ended the first set on a 5-0 run

Set Four vs. La Sierra

-          The Bobcats hit .448 in the fourth set holding La Sierra to -.032.

Set Five vs. La Sierra

-          Tied 14-14 in the fifth set, Wilson scored the Bobcats 15th point and then Ultreras scored match point on the next rally with her 17th and final kill of the day.

Career Record Book Notables:

-          Lei Ramilo became the program's all-time leader in sets played (400 career sets played) and moved into second all-time with 1,145 career digs

-          Choi moved into third in program history with 377 career sets played and ninth with 563 career digs

-          Tanasescu now owns the third most solo blocks in program history with 40 career solo blocks and the fifth most total blocks (159 blocks)

-          Ultreras moved into seventh on the program's all-time digs list with 585 career digs

-          Riley moved into tenth all-time with 462 career kills

Up next, UC Merced will finish it's season-opening 14-match road trip at Pacific Union College on Thursday, October 10. First serve from The Covered Wagon in Angwin, Calif., is scheduled for 7:00pm.
