Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Women's Water Polo Falls to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's water polo team hung tight but ultimately fell 9-5 to Whittier College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (2-20), who fell to Whittier 17-5 earlier in the year, showed improvement on the defensive end from last time these two teams met in mid-February.

Hope Stokes made 12 saves in the cage, marking her second straight outing with more saves than goals allowed. She also shutout Whittier in the third quarter.

Piper Ferris led the Bobcats offensively with two goals and scored on 50% of her shot attempts. It marked her second multi-goal outing in the last three matches.

Liberty Hamilton, Melanie Torres, and Aislyn Sorsky also scored a goal for UC Merced.

Hamilton scored Saturday's first goal less than two minutes in to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. After Whittier followed with three consecutive goals to end the first quarter, Ferris deposited her first shot into the back of the net to start the second frame and bring the Bobcats within a goal. However, Whittier got hot again and scored three more times in the half and held the Bobcats to just one more goal from Sorsky inside the final minute. Whittier led 6-3 at halftime.

A defensive third quarter saw Torres score the only goal with 39 seconds left to cut the Bobcats deficit to 6-4.

The Bobcats remained close until Whittier reeled off three straight scores to lead 9-4 with 2:26 remaining. Ferris added one more for the Bobcats at the 1:52 mark, which completed the scoring for both teams in the 9-5 Whittier victory.

Alexandra Haluska was the difference maker as she tallied four goals for the Poets, including two in the fourth quarter.

Looking ahead, UC Merced will host Cal State East Bay in the regular season finale and senior day on Friday, April 12 at 2:00pm.
