CALDWELL, Idaho – Yesenia Tijerina scored two more goals and the University of California, Merced women's soccer team shutout Eastern Oregon University 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Simplot Stadium.
With their third straight shutout, the Bobcats (3-0) have their longest shutout streak to start the season since the 2015 campaign.
Offensively, Tijerina registered a brace for the second consecutive game and scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 9th minute. She is the first Bobcat with back-to-back multi-goal games since the program's all-time leading goal scorer Jenn Salinger accomplished the feat in 2021.
Lexi Wright was also key offensively assisting the game-winning goal and scoring a goal of her own in the 49th minute.
Wright's connection to Tijerina early in the game was special. She delivered a perfect pass from the center circle 40 yards down the field and in stride Tijerina rocketed a one-timer into the back of the net. Wright's assist was her second of the season.
Wright's goal was also one for the highlight reel, burying a banger top shelf from 30 yards out. She recovered possession in the Bobcats attacking third and worked around one defender before creating enough space to fire and find the back of the net for the first time this season.
The Bobcats weren't done yet.
Tijerina put an exclamation point on the match in the 76th minute. After Preeya Singh sent a long ball down the field, Tijerina took possession and sent another rocket into the goal. Tijerina was 20 yards away from goal and near the touchline when she scored.
Overall, UC Merced outshot Eastern Oregon 21-8 and 9-3 on target. UC Merced applied pressure all day long and took five of their shots in the final 15 minutes of action.
Tijerina led all players with six shots in her 70 minutes of action. Alexia Alva and Yareli Hernandez took three shots each off the bench.
Alicia Lepe earned her second shutout of the season and is the sixth Bobcat in program history with multiple shutouts. She is just the second Bobcat with a shutout in her first two career starts, joining Emma Broderick from 2017. Lepe was credited with three saves, two in the second half.
Zitlali Herrera played all 90 minutes.
Singh made her season debut after playing three matches for the Fiji Young Kulas in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia.
Looking ahead, UC Merced will play 13th-ranked College of Idaho on Sunday, September 14 at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell, ID. First touch is scheduled for 10:00am PST.
