TURLOCK, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Stanislaus State on Thursday night inside Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Set scores were 25-27, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18.
The Bobcats dropped to 5-13 overall and 4-5 in CCAA play.
Kyra Miller led the Bobcats filling the stat sheet with 14 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, four blocks, and a service ace. Both her kills and digs output tied her CCAA high. Miller's service ace moved her ahead of Genna Garrett for sixth in program history with 76 career aces.
Sera Riley turned in ten kills without an error on 23 attempts. She finished with a .435 hitting percentage. Riley also added 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the campaign.
Natalie Riley was good for eight kills and two service aces.
Semiramis Tanasescu had six kills and three blocks, while Ellie Gordon had nine assists and six digs.
Other notables include nine digs and six assists from Jazmine Banks, four kills from Kylah Guzman, and two blocks from Morgan Wilson. Wilson tied Olanasaze Ojo for fifth in program history with 169 career total blocks.
The Bobcats won the back and forth opening set that saw 12 ties and five lead changes. No team led by more than two points until back-to-back kills from Wilson and Gordon put UC Merced up 20-17. A Warrior attack error then gave the Bobcats a 21-17 lead. Shortly after, Yahaira Vazquez and Miller went for back-to-back kills to set up game point, up 24-21. However, Stanislaus State battled back to pull even 24-24 and force extra points. Then tied 25-25, Miller delivered a kill which was followed by another Warrior attack error to give the Bobcats the 1-0 match lead.
Stanislaus State put together a 5-0 run early in the second set but the Bobcats fought back to take a 13-12 lead highlighted by N. Riley's aces. Stan State had another burst in them, a 4-0 mini-run, to reach 20 points first while leading the Bobcats 20-16. The Bobcats couldn't get any closer than three points the rest of the set and fell 25-18.
Miller and Tanasescu opened set three with a block, however that was the Bobcats only lead in the frame. A little later, Stanislaus State created major separation with a 9-1 run to capture a double-figure advantage at 16-6. The Bobcats collected five of the next eight points before Stanislaus State left no doubt and put together a 6-2 set-ending run to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Bobcats hung around longer in the fourth set and were within three points as late as the 19-16 mark with strong play from Miller. Stanislaus State owned the match the rest of the way, starting with a 4-0 run to build up a 23-16 lead. The Bobcats stayed alive with the help of two Stan State setting errors, but the Warriors got back on track and delivered back-to-back kills to win the match.
Looking ahead, UC Merced will welcome Cal State East Bay to the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium on Saturday, October 18 for a 7:00pm match.
