SEASIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.
The Bobcats (6-5-3, 3-4) allowed multiple goals for the first time this season. Both of the Otters goals were scored off of rebounds.
Alexia Alva put the Bobcats ahead 1-0 in the 20th minute with her first goal of the season. She buried her one-timer lower left corner from the top of the goal area. Katy Flores created the scoring opportunity with service into the box that was then deflected by an Otter and Alva was set up perfectly for the score.
UC Merced carried its 1-0 lead into halftime. The shot count was 6-6 at halftime with Alicia Lepe having to make three saves.
CSUMB hit the Bobcats with a flurry of shots early in the second half and netted the equalizer in the 55th minute. An Otters shot from the corner of the box hit the near post and bounced right to their Miye Kodama near the marker who just had to tap it into the back of the net.
CSUMB scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute after another series of shots, this time after a corner kick. There was a header shot directly off the corner that was batted down by Lepe and then the Otters rebound attempt was kick saved in the crowded goal area. However, the ball found an Otters player for a third time and the shot from Kamryn Bubak went in.
UC Merced only got off one shot following the Otters second goal. The Bobcats took four second half shots overall.
The final shot count was 15-10, 8-4 on goal, both in favor of the Otters.
Lepe tied her career-high for the third time this season with six saves. Her outing put her ahead of Emma Broderick for sixth in program history with 71 career saves.
Trinidad Quiroz held team-high with three shots, two on frame. Alva and Flores accounted for the Bobcats other shots on target.
UC Merced won the corner kick battle 3-1.
