Men's Water Polo Falls to Biola in Regular Season Finale

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's water polo team fell 16-11 to Biola in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (5-18, 1-5) led by two goals late in the third quarter but were unable to close out the Eagles on their Senior Day.

Andrew Jones and Evan Ladeairous led the Bobcats with four goals each. Jakee Chacon, Aydann Hambruch, and Weston Oliver scored a goal apiece. Jones also had two assists.

Jones opened the scoring 62 seconds into the match and the Bobcats had their offense going early with five goals in the first six minutes of the game to own a 5-1 lead. Jones and Ladeairous combined for four of the five.

Biola had a strong offensive stretch at the end of the first quarter and into the second frame using a 4-0 goal scoring run to tie the game 5-5. Chacon stopped Biola's run right before halftime by converting a penalty shot to give the Bobcats a 6-5 lead at the break.

The score was tied 7-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter before Jones and Ladeairous went back-to-back for the Bobcats 9-7 advantage.

However, the Eagles responded with five unanswered goals over the next six minutes of gametime. The run not only gave them their first lead of the game, but it put the Eagles up 12-9 with five minutes to go in the match. Hambruch cut into deficit with a goal at the 4:49 mark, but Biola extended their lead to 14-10 inside of three minutes and finished the game on a 4-1 scoring run overall to seal its 16-11 victory.

Matthew Lloyd was credited with seven saves in goal.

Oliver extended his goal scoring streak to ten games, while Jones' extended his to seven. Jones has multiple goals in five of the seven during the streak. Evan Ladeairous tied his career-high with his four goals.

Up next, UC Merced will compete in the WWPA Championships in Geneva, Ohio November 21-23. The Bobcats games will be exhibitions as UC Merced is ineligible for postseason play in the middle of the NCAA Division II transition.
