MERCED, Calif. – University of California, Merced men's water polo junior attacker Andrew Jones was named to the All-WWPA Second Team, while freshman utility Christian Soto took home All-WWPA Freshman Team honors.
Jones and Soto are the first ever Bobcats to win All-WWPA honors.
Jones led UC Merced with a career-high 48 goals this season, the fifth most goals by any Bobcat in a single season. He started the year scoring at least one goal in eleven straight games and finished the year on a seven-game goal scoring streak. Throughout the year, Jones registered 13 multi-goal games including a hat trick or better seven times. He scored six goals twice, including at Fresno Pacific to lead the Bobcats to their first ever WWPA win. The Temple City, Calif., native earned WWPA Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this season. Jones was also credited with a team-high 26 assists and was third with 17 steals. He heads into his senior season ranked second in program history with 118 career goals.
Soto scored 13 goals on the year and had a pair of multi-goal games, including a hat trick against Caltech. He found the back of the net in his first two career games against McKendree and Whittier at the Rare Air Invitational hosted by Air Force. He also scored in each meeting against Fresno Pacific. Soto added 14 steals and six assists on the year. The Huntington Beach, Calif., natives 14 steals were tied for fifth on the team.
