CLOVIS, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's water polo team earned its first ever WWPA victory with a14-10 win over Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (5-16, 1-3) used a big second quarter to win the conference match, outscoring FPU 5-1 in the frame. UC Merced's 14 goals marked the most in the four WWPA matches so far this season.
Andrew Jones led the Bobcats with a career-high tying six goals. Jakee Chacon registered his first career hat trick, while five other Bobcats scored at least once.
Matthew Lloyd recorded 13 saves in the cage and has 10+ saves in every conference game this year.
UC Merced and FPU traded goals in the first quarter resulting in a 3-3 tie after eight minutes of play. Jones, Chacon, and Hayden Markell made up the Bobcats three goals. The Bobcats had a 3-2 lead in the closing seconds but FPU converted on a power play with three seconds on the clock.
Chacon gave the Bobcats a 4-3 lead at the 5:07 mark of the second quarter and the Bobcats never looked back. His goal started a 5-0 scoring run over the next four minutes to put UC Merced on top 8-3. FPU got one goal back before intermission. Jones had two goals in the explosion. Evan Ladeairous and Christian Soto accounted for the other goals.
Chacon and Vincent Labonte scored unanswered goals to extend the Bobcats lead to 10-4 early in the third quarter. FPU closed the gap to four goals later in the period but the Bobcats didn't let FPU cut into the deficit any more. Head coach Hannah Ellett's teams lead was 12-7 going into the fourth.
Jones and Weston Oliver provided the Bobcats goals in the fourth quarter to finish out the 14-10 victory.
Oliver has now scored in eight straight games for the Bobcats.
