Bobcats Excel Offensively to Earn First CCAA Win, 74-64 Over Cal Poly Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. - The University of California, Merced men's basketball team shot 56% from the floor to earn its first ever CCAA win, 74-64 at Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday afternoon in Arcata.

The Bobcats (3-3, 1-1) .564 field percentage was their highest in a true road game since February 15, 2018.

Elijah Charles led the Bobcats with a career-high and a 2025 team-high 23 points. Charles, who shot 53%, added nine rebounds and two steals to his offensive output.

Cyprus Graham scored a career-high 13 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting off the bench. He is the Bobcats first ever player to shoot 100% from the field (minimum of five attempts) in a true road game and is the Bobcats first guard in any game to accomplish that feat since 2014. Graham was 4-4 from inside the arc to go along with hitting his lone three-pointer. He also cashed in both his free throw attempts.

Jaden Hubbard tallied eleven points, five rebounds, and a career-high four assists.

Jordan Bateman pitched in a career-high eight points and two blocks.

Jon Taylor was strong with seven points, a career-high seven rebounds, and a career-high tying four steals.

Pawllos Habtom was good for six points and five rebounds, while Myles Haynes had four points and two assists.

The Bobcats played from behind for the first ten minutes of the game before pulling even on a Bateman offensive rebound putback, 17-17. Shortly after, Charles put down a two-handed slam to put the Bobcats on top 21-20 with 8:48 left in the first half.

Charles' dunk was the start of a 13-4 UC Merced run that stretched over the next four minutes. Five different Bobcats scored in the burst and UC Merced led for the rest of the game. The advantage at the peak of the run was 32-24. Head coach Gary Stewart and company led 34-28 at intermission.

Charles scored five unanswered to start the second half to give the Bobcats their first double figure lead of the game, 39-28. UC Merced went up 46-34 shortly after, however Humboldt responded with an 11-0 run to cut the Bobcats lead to just a single point with 12:11 to play.

The Bobcats called a timeout and went right back to work, turning in an 11-0 run of their own with eight straight points in the paint and then a Taylor triple to go back up 12 points, 57-45 with 8:45 remaining. Although Humboldt got within seven, Graham got the Bobcats back in a good spot with seven points of his own as part of a 9-0 UC Merced run over the next two and a half minutes.

UC Merced held a game-high lead of 16 points at 70-54 with 2:24 left to play.

UC Merced's 74 total points marked the most in a road game this year. UC Merced turned in 54 points in the paint and hit three-pointers when they needed to, shooting 50% (3-6) from downtown.

UC Merced also committed a season-low ten turnovers. Defensively, the Bobcats held the Lumberjacks to just 35% shooting and allowed just seven free throw attempts.

The Bobcats closed out a season-long four-game road trip.

UC Merced will take an exams break before getting back to action inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium when Cal Poly Pomona comes to town on December 19. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
