SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The University of California, Merced men's basketball team was unable to extend its winning streak to a season-long four games, falling 81-65 to Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday night inside Coussoulis Arena.
Sterling McClanahan led three Bobcats (9-12, 7-10) in double figures with 19 points and two steals, extending his streak to eight straight games with 14+ points. He shot 87% (7-8) from the free throw line
Elijah Charles finished with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for his fifth consecutive double-double and league-leading eleventh of the season. His 15 rebounds marked the second highest rebounding output by any CCAA player this year. He grabbed six offensive rebounds. Charles, who shot 66% (6-9) from the field, also had three assists and a block.
Jaden Hubbard scored ten points on 50% (2-4) shooting from the three-point line and neared a double-double with nine rebounds.
Jon Taylor had six points on 50% (2-4) shooting from downtown.
Cyprus Graham added eight points, three rebounds, and a career-high tying three assists. He hit all four of his free throws.
Other notables include four points from Myles Haynes, three assists from Pawllos Habtom, and three rebounds from Austin Dewes.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 11-2 lead four minutes in highlighted by six second chance points, including four from Charles. However, CSUSB scored the next seven points and went on a 20-3 run over the next six minutes to change the game. The Bobcats followed with a 6-2 spurt to pull within two possessions, but another Coyotes push was good for their first double figure lead of the night, 32-20 with 4:40 left in the first half.
UC Merced had another response that cut the deficit in half over the next two minutes. The Bobcats couldn't garner enough momentum to finish the final two minutes of the half strong and trailed 40-29 at intermission.
CSUSB continued its strong play out of the break and went up by a game-high 20 points midway through the second half, 63-43. The two teams traded buckets over the next four minutes before a 9-2 Bobcats push led by McClanahan kept them alive, trailing 73-60 with four minutes left. However, CSUSB didn't let the Bobcats get any closer and finished out the 81-65 victory.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats held a 38-31 rebounding advantage and shot a season-high 81% (13-16) at the free throw line. UC Merced finished the game shooting 40% from the floor and 23% from beyond the arc. CSUSB shot 50% from the floor and 45% (9-20) from three-point range.
Looking ahead, UC Merced will play Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 3:00pm inside Kellogg Arena in Pomona, Calif.
