Women's Basketball Breaks School's Scoring Record in 110-45 Victory

Box Score

REDDING, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's basketball team scored a program-record 110 points on Saturday afternoon to win their first game of the season, 110-45 against Northwest Indian College at the Simpson Classic.

The Bobcats (1-1) also set program-records with 43 made field goals, 25 steals, and a .923 free-throw percentage.

The 110 total points is the second most by any team in the California Pacific Conference in the last three years, while the steals total ranks top five in the same timeframe.

Five Bobcats scored in double figures in the dominant win, which is the most since February 9, 2019. Head coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery's team combined to shoot 53% (43-81) from the field and 44% (12-27) from three-point land.

Haylee Owen led the Bobcats for the second straight game with 20 points on 73% (8-11) shooting. It marked her ninth career 20-point game, two of which she has shot 70% or higher in.

With her efforts, Owen passed Brittany Martinez for seventh in program history with 635 career points.

Andrea Rogers turned in a career-best performance, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block. Her points, steals and assists numbers were career-high's. Her seven rebounds and a blocked shot were game-high, while she shared game-high in steals with Mikayla Mabie.

Along with Mabie's defensive efforts, the senior guard was good for 15 points and a game-high five assists. Her 15 points came while shooting 100% (6-6) from the floor. Mabie is just the third ever Bobcat without a miss and a minimum of five attempts. Mabie joins the elite company of Owen and Aubrey Hayes, who both accomplished that feat in the 2018 season. Two of Mabie's makes were from downtown.

Cierra McClain and Victoria Farris rounded out the Bobcats double figure scorers with 12 points each. For Farris, that was a career-high. She also notched a career-high in steals with three. McClain added four offensive rebounds and three assists.

Julinna Fletes pitched in nine points, while Rainah Smith and Tiffany Nguyen had eight each. Fletes and Nguyen both knocked down two triples.

Other individual notables include three steals from Nia Smiley, three assists from Aislyn Dora and a couple steals from Parker Fromm. Dora made her collegiate debut and made her first career field goal late in the third quarter.

The Bobcats most dominant quarter was the first as they scored 41 points, forced 14 turnovers and notched ten steals to build an early 30-point lead. The Bobcats biggest run in the frame was a 14-0 run highlighted by a pair of triples from Owen and Fletes.

The Bobcats opened the second quarter on a 16-3 run to build their lead to 40. Owen shot 100% in that surge with seven points and a steal.

UC Merced led 65-24 at intermission before building their lead to 50 points midway through the third quarter and as big as 61 points as Fletes buried a triple on the last possession of the frame.

The biggest lead of the night was 70 points after Farris notched a steal and converted offensively at the other end of the floor. The lead was 105-35 with six and a half minutes remaining.

Rogers and Owen hit a shot prior to the final buzzer to get the Bobcats to 110 total points.

Entering the season, the Bobcats previous program-record was 102 points set back on November 4, 2018.

Up next, the Bobcats host the defending NAIA National Champion Westmont College Warriors on Hostetler Court inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium on Saturday, October 30th. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30pm.
