Box Score MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced men's soccer team extended their season-long shutout streak to three games in a 4-0 win over Sierra Nevada University on Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats (9-3, 5-0) are now 5-0 in Cal Pac play for the second straight season and have earned a shutout in ten of their last 12 conference games dating back to 2019.
Brycen Miller recorded three saves in the shutout, while Marcos Ceballos scored the Bobcats game-winning goal for the third consecutive game and set the program record for the quickest goal in program history. Ceballos found the back of the net in 35 seconds, besting the previous mark originally set by Marco Torralva on September 13, 2017.
Kevin Capetillo and Michael De La Cruz earned assists on the historical score, connecting a pass down the sideline before sending the ball to Ceballos inside the 18-yard box. Capetillo, who helped set up three scores against Cal Maritime a week ago, has recorded an assist in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
Ceja doubled the Bobcats lead with a goal in the 31st minute. Despite being triple-teamed, Ceja managed to spin to his right to elude the defenders and laced his shot past the diving keeper and into the upper portion of net. He is the first Bobcat with at least six goals and seven assists in a single-season since Bryan Henriquez Rivera accomplished that feat in 2019.
Andres Lua and Brian Lua each scored in the final ten minutes of the match to finalize the Bobcats 4-0 victory.
Juan Flores and Capetillo recorded the assists on the Bobcats late goals.
Andres Lua played give and go with Flores to set up a straightaway shot, while Brian Lua took a pass in stride from Capetillo on the right side of the 18 and pulled the goalie off his line before firing into the back of the net for his first career goal.
UC Merced outshot Sierra Nevada 38-8 overall, 19-4 on goal. Each team took the majority of their shots in the second half.
Ceballos and Ceja led all players with six shots. Lua managed to get off five.
The Bobcats also won the corner kick battle 7-2 and were whistled for just six fouls compared to the Eagles eleven.
Each team was issued a yellow card.
Looking ahead, the Bobcats visit Simpson University on Sunday, October 31. First touch from UPrep High School in Redding, Calif., is scheduled for 1:30pm.
