Box Score MERCED, Calif. - Haylee Owen led all scorers with 19 points and the University of California, Merced women's basketball team shot 56% overall in an 84-49 win over Holy Names University on Hostetler Court Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (5-5) got back to .500 with the win and four of the five wins this season have been by at least 35 points.
UC Merced's 56% (33-59) success rate from the field is the highest since November 4, 2018.
Owen's 19 points came on 80% (8-10) shooting and she was also 100% (3-3) from beyond the arc. Owen is one of just five players in program history to be perfect from beyond the arc with a minimum of three attempts. Aside from her seventh double figure scoring output of the season, Owen also contributed six assists and three rebounds.
Rainah Smith was good for 13 points on 75% (6-8) from the field, while Gabrielle Israel buried four triples for 12 points in just her second career game. Israel has made at least one three-point field goal in each of her two contests.
Mikayla Mabie dished out a season-high nine assists to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Mabie's nine assists are the most by any Bobcat this year and she is just the fourth player in program history to hit that mark. Her multi-steal game is her fourth straight, which is the longest streak on the team.
Damilola Sule had a career-high seven points in her second collegiate game. Madison Hotchkiss and Andrea Rogers had six points each.
Cierra McClain pitched in five points and knocked down the first shot of the game, a straightaway triple off an Owen feed to open up the scoring.
The two teams combined to make nine of their first eleven shots and the game was tied 10-10 less than four minutes in. The Bobcats continued to make their shots the remainder of the quarter but also got plenty of stops defensively and ended the period on a 17-3 run to jump out to a 27-13 lead.
UC Merced led by double figures the rest of the way, primarily extending their lead in the second half. In the second quarter, the Bobcats advantage was between 12 and 18 points. The 18-point lead came early in the period after back-to-back buckets from Hotchkiss and Lewis. UC Merced's halftime lead was 14 points at 46-32 due to Owen beating the buzzer from the elbow.
The Bobcats were quick to build their lead to 20 in the second half and did so on a McClain jumper less than four minutes in. Overall, the Bobcats outscored Holy Names 23-6 in the third quarter and grabbed a 30-point lead at 66-36 in the final minute. It got to 31 points as Sule cashed in a free throw to complete a three-point play.
Leading by 29 points midway through the fourth quarter, Soana Afu sparked a 10-0 run with a basket down low and the run put the Bobcats up by a game-high 39 points at 84-45. Aislyn Dora had four points in the surge that spanned over three minutes. Holy Names cashed in a couple field goals down the stretch to finalize the scoring.
The Bobcats 84-49 win over Holy Names improved them to 4-1 in the all-time series. Saturday afternoon was the first time Holy Names traveled to Merced since 2012.
45 of the Bobcats 84 points in the win came either off a turnover or off an offensive rebound. That is the second highest combined output of the campaign.
The Bobcats assisted on 27 of their 33 made field goals.
Looking ahead, UC Merced hosts Bethesda University of California inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium to complete a season-long four-game homestand on Monday, November 29 at 4:00pm.
