Bobcats Dominate Pacific Union, Earn Third Straight Sweep

Box Score

MERCED, Calif. - Behind a season-high .423 hitting percentage and 12 service aces, the University of California, Merced women's volleyball team earned their third straight sweep with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-11) win over Pacific Union College on Sunday afternoon inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (3-2) three straight sweeps is something that has only been accomplished two other times in program history. The last time was in 2014.

Olanasaze Ojo and Hannah Dillingham led the Bobcats efforts this time around and were each good for a career-high ten kills. Ojo, who also had three blocks, tallied a .769 hitting percentage and became just the fourth player in program history to register double figure kills without an error. Ojo (10/0/13) joins the likes of Victoria Rouse, Jaysonna Johnson and Patricia Schellentrager.

Dillingham's ten kills were accompanied by a career-high three service aces.

Jalen Carey, Destiny Lei Ramilo and Madison Mayoraglo each had two service aces. Three other Bobcats had one ace, including Bianca Malaluan. Malaluan has an ace in three consecutive matches.

Overall, the 12 total service aces gives the Bobcats two straight matches with double figure aces. That feat hasn't been accomplished since the end of the 2016 season.

Head coach Ai Prachumsri utilized three different setters once again and it was Edwena Wong who led the Bobcats in assists with a season-high 13. Serena Choi had ten assists, while Malaluan was good for seven.

Wong, who was the first setter to take a turn, found Dillingham to get the game started in the Bobcats favor. Dillingham's kill was followed by a Lei Ramilo ace and the Bobcats did a great job setting the tone early on.

A Carey ace put the Bobcats up 7-3 soon after and the lead doubled to eight points at 16-8. Up 19-10, Dillingham took the service line and powered the Bobcats to the set win. Back-to-back service aces started a 6-0 service run and it was a PUC attack error that officially ended the set, 25-18.

The second set started with three straight UC Merced kills, two off the hand of Ojo. The 3-0 lead quickly turned into an 11-1 lead and it only grew from there. The lead was extended to 15 points at 17-2 and got to 18 points at 21-3. The set ended with back-to-back kills, one each from Tea Bishop and Valentina Evans. The Bobcats finished with 14 kills in the set compared to just one error. Bishop had three kills in the set en route to her career-high six in the match. The freshman didn't commit an error on ten attempts.

Bishop was also responsible for the final frame's first point via the kill. Lacey Gallagher followed with a couple kills of her own and it hardly took any time for the Bobcats to create sizable separation. Although it wasn't as dominant as the second set, the Bobcats found themselves up five at 8-3 and up eight points at 13-5. The Bobcats extended their lead with Annamarie Caldero serving. Her strong serves made it hard for PUC to get into their system and her run was highlighted by two Ojo blocks. Teola Nowak joined Ojo for one of the two blocks and it put the Bobcats up 18-7.

The Bobcats largest lead in the third set was 15 points at 23-8. Ojo picked up the Bobcats 24th point with a kill, while Dillingham earned her tenth kill on the same swing she notched match point.

The sweep puts the Bobcats over .500 for the first time this season.

Pacific Union hit -.178 in the match.

Other notables include seven digs from Madison Mayoralgo and two blocks from Valentina Evans. Olivia Harden had five digs.

Prachumsri improved to 10-0 all-time against Pacific Union and six straight wins have come via the sweep.

Up next, the Bobcats welcome first-time opponent Park University - Gilbert to town for three matches over the weekend starting Saturday, March 13.
