Box Score MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's basketball team dominated University of Antelope Valley from start to finish and earned their largest program win in California Pacific Conference history, winning 92-51 on Monday night inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
Head coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery and the Bobcats (8-7, 2-0) are now 2-0 in the Cal Pac for the third time in the last four years.
The 41-point scoring margin beats the previous record of 40 in a 75-35 win over Pacific Union College on January 20, 2018.
The Bobcats 92 total points Monday night also neared a program Cal Pac single-game scoring record, just short of the 95 in overtime against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2017.
Haylee Owen accounted for nearly a quarter of the Bobcats 92 total points and led five double figure scorers with 22 points. Her scoring output tied her season-high and marked the eleventh 20+ point game of her career, five of which have come in Cal Pac action.
Owen added a career-high seven steals to her offensive efforts and is one of just seven players in program history to hit that mark in a single game. The Chula Vista, Calif., native also passed up Kayla Polman and Jecenia Trinidad for sixth on the program's all-time steals list with 107 career steals.
Mikayla Mabie notched her first double-double in a UC Merced uniform with 13 points and a program single-game record 12 assists. Mabie broke the program's previous record of ten assists and she becomes the third player in program history with a double-double consisting of points and assists. She joins the likes of Deja Jackson and Owen.
Mabie also tied her season-high with four steals and grabbed four rebounds to complete her all-around performance.
A game after setting a career-high in rebounds (10), Damilola Sule tallied a career-high 13 points on 63% (5-8) shooting and three steals. Sule hauled in seven rebounds as well.
Madison Hotchkiss and Deyliana Lewis pitched in 12 points each for the second straight game. Hotchkiss, one of the Cal Pac's top shooters from beyond the arc, connected on four triples while also nearing her season-high with five assists. Her five rebounds marked a season-high.
Lewis finished 55% (5-9) from the floor and notched two steals. Her 12-point outing gives her five double figure scoring performances this season.
UC Merced has now had five double figure scorers in three contests this year.
Other individual notables from Monday night's win include four steals from Rainah Smith, three steals from Andrea Rogers, and a pair of field goals from Soana Afu.
Steals were huge for the Bobcats all night long and of the 35 total turnovers forced, 25 of them came with a steal. The Bobcats were able to score 39 points off UAV's turnovers. The 35 forced turnovers were the most all year.
Fitting, the Bobcats first basket came off a Smith steal and Rogers reaped the benefit of it at the other end of the floor. The Bobcats next basket was an Owen triple and then a Gabrielle Israel three-pointer soon after put the Bobcats up 10-8 and they would only build upon it the rest of the way. Smith and Hotchkiss each got on the board before the end of the quarter and the Bobcats led 15-8 after one.
A Hotchkiss triple in the early goings of the second quarter sparked a UC Merced 10-0 run that put them up by 17 points. Owen got the lead to 20 at 33-13 with another three-pointer and followed with a transition layup shortly after. The Bobcats led 39-24 at intermission, their second double figure halftime lead in the last five Cal Pac games dating back to last season.
The Bobcats blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring UAV 35-10 behind a 9-0 run and an 11-0 run. The 11-0 run started with a Sule basket midway through the quarter and lasted two minutes and 15 seconds of game time. Sule had four points and two steals in the surge, while Mabie assisted on three of the five made field goals.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 40 points at 74-34 by the time the period came to a close.
Five straight fourth quarter points, including a triple from Lewis, pushed the Bobcats lead to 45. Later in the quarter, a Sule free throw got the Bobcats their first of four game-high 48-point leads of the night. The Bobcats 48-point leads were 86-38, 88-40, 90-42 and 92-44.
Overall, this was the Bobcats fifth win by 40 or more points this season. The Bobcats had seven 40+ point wins in its previous eight years.
UC Merced finished the night shooting 41% (33-81) from the field, 37% (10-37) from beyond the arc and 62% (16-26) from the charity stripe.
The Bobcats were able to get off 29 more shots than the Pioneers due to the turnover ratio. UC Merced limited UAV to just a 33% (17-52) clip from the floor.
Looking ahead, UC Merced begins a four-game road trip at Simpson University in Redding, Calif., on Saturday, January 22. Tipoff from the James M. Grant Center is scheduled for 5:30pm.
