Women's Basketball Dominates Cal Maritime, 78-47

VALLEJO, Calif. - Deyliana Lewis led five Bobcats in double figures with 18 points and the University of California, Merced women's basketball team dominated Cal Maritime 78-47 on Wednesday night in the Bay Area.

The Bobcats (5-7, 5-2) led by at least 20 points for the whole second half en route to their highest scoring road performance and their first road win of the year. The Bobcats also grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds in the victory and made ten three-point field goals for the second straight contest.

Lewis stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. The senior has now scored 18 points in back-to-back outings and at least 16 points in three straight contests. She scored 18 points on Wednesday behind a .667 (6-9) field goal percentage and a perfect night at the foul line (5-5). With her efforts on the glass, Lewis passed both Danielle Ward and Christina Castro for seventh in program history with 336 career rebounds. Lewis' seven assists tied her season-high. 

Gabby Martini finished with a career-high 16 points and made four three-pointers for the second consecutive game. Martini also grabbed six rebounds.

Faith Mucheru also had a career-game with career-high's of 14 points and nine rebounds.

Paloma Ramirez added 13 points and eleven rebounds for her first career double-double. Also of note, Ramirez had three assists and a steal.

Victoria Farris was good for 11 points, five assists, and three steals. 

UC Merced saw five Bobcats score in double figures for the first time since February 15, 2022.

Aislyn Dora finished with season-high's of six points, six rebounds, and three assists.

The Bobcats were without starters Tiffany Nguyen and Damilola Sule in the victory.

After scoring was hard to come by for the first five minutes, Dora broke a 5-5 tie and the Bobcats closed the first quarter on a 19-9 run which was enough to keep the Bobcats in front for the rest of the night. Ramirez splashed two of her three triples and recorded eight points in the surge. 

The Bobcats buried three more triples to start the second quarter and held Cal Maritime scoreless for the first three minutes and 20 seconds to extend the lead to as many as 19 points at 33-14. With the help of Mucheru, the Bobcats were able to see their advantage grow to 25 points at intermission and the Bobcats doubled up the Keelhaulers 50-25 at halftime.

Head coach Kellie Bernard's team maintained a lead that was between 24 and 29 points for the duration of the third quarter. The Bobcats won the turnover battle 7-0 in the third period. Lewis and Mucheru each had a steal.

The Bobcats biggest lead of the game was 31 points, first coming at 76-45 after a Farris three-point field goal. Each team scored a field goal in the closing minutes to finalize the score at 79-48 in favor of UC Merced.

UC Merced finished the night limiting Cal Maritime to just 29% (18-62) shooting from the floor, 25% (6-24) from downtown and just five free throws. The Bobcats managed to get 27 more shots off than their opponent due to grabbing a season-high 21 rebounds and winning the turnover battle 24-9.

The Bobcats win over Cal Maritime was their 14th in a row against the opponent dating back to the 2015-16 season.

After the calendar flips, UC Merced will host University of Antelope Valley on Thursday, January 5 at 5:30pm inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
