Bobcats Prove to be Clutch, Win Second Straight Cal Pac Game

Box Score

MERCED, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's basketball team knocked off Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 68-64 on Friday to win their second game in as many nights inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (2-5, 2-0) 68 points marked a season-high and head coach Kellie Bernard's squad hit that mark behind four double figure scorers, led by Paloma Ramirez's 17 points.

For the second straight night, UC Merced made big plays late to win a tight ballgame. This time around, it was Victoria Farris splashing a go-ahead three-pointer with a minute to go. Farris then sealed the game by making four consecutive foul shots in the closing seconds to get UC Merced their first winning streak of the season and their 12th straight Cal Pac win dating back to last year.

Ramirez, who has scored 15+ points in four straight games, was joined by Damilola Sule, Farris, and Deyliana Lewis with double figures.

Sule tied her season-high of 16 points with the help of five trips to the foul line in which she made eight of her nine foul shots (89%). Sule also grabbed eleven rebounds for her sixth consecutive double-double, extending her already historic double-double run to start the campaign. Her six double-double's are the most in program history and the most by any Cal Pac player through their first six games in the last ten years.

Farris, the Bobcats hero down the stretch, tallied a career-high 14 points to go along with three assists. Lewis added 12 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

Tiffany Nguyen facilitated and was credited with a career-high six assists.

Other individual notables include five points from Nia Smiley, five rebounds from Ramirez, and two steals from Ngyuen.

Ramirez helped get the Bobcats out to a 10-3 lead midway through the opening quarter but Embry-Riddle responded to the early deficit and finished the first period on top, 14-13.

Tied 18-18 shortly after, Farris cashed in a field goal to put the Bobcats on top 20-18. UC Merced held the lead through intermission and went ahead by as many as ten points following a Farris triple in the final 90 seconds of the half.

UC Merced remained in front for the first seven minutes of the third quarter, however lost their lead late at 42-41 due to back-to-back baskets from Embry-Riddle's Hannah Urbano and then were starting at a 45-42 deficit heading into the final frame.

After a few lead changes to start the fourth quarter, the Bobcats trailed 61-57 with three minutes to play. Sule tied the game at 61 with four straight points of her own, and then it was Farris' clutch triple from the wing to give the Bobcats a 64-61 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Embry-Riddle followed Farris' three-pointer with a layup on the other end, and had a chance to win the game with the shot clock off but came up empty and left 13 seconds on the clock. Farris sunk a pair of foul shots, and then was forced to make two more that ultimately sealed the game for the Bobcats, putting the home team up 68-64 with 0.9 seconds left.

The Bobcats finished the night shooting a program-record 94% (16-17) from the foul line. UC Merced also shot a season-high 43% (23-54) from the field and 31% (4-13) from three-point land.

Up next, UC Merced hosts Park University Gilbert on Sunday, December 4 at 5:30pm inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium to close out a three-game homestand.
