Box Score MERCED, Calif. - Victoria Farris scored a career-high 23 points and was key in a late 15-0 run to lead the University of California, Merced women's basketball team to a 72-62 win over Park University Gilbert on Sunday night inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
With the win, the Bobcats (3-5, 3-0) completed the three-game sweep of the Arizona schools to start Cal Pac play and extended their conference winning streak to 13 straight games dating back to last season.
Farris scored ten of her career-high 23 points in a huge fourth quarter that saw the Bobcats outscore the Buccaneers 24-10 overall. The Bobcats, who overcame a double figure deficit earlier in the game, trailed by one with under five to go before reeling off 15 unanswered points to stay perfect at home. A Farris triple helped ice the game, putting the Bobcats up 67-58 inside the final minute. Farris finished the night hitting nine of her ten free throws and also had three assists for the third straight night.
Paloma Ramirez added 15 points with the help of three triples. Ramirez becomes the Bobcats first ever true freshman with 15 or more points in five consecutive games. The Watsonville, Calif., native also tied her season-high with two steals.
Deyliana Lewis stuffed the stat sheet with a one-of-a-kind performance. The senior finished with career-high's of 15 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and five blocks to go along with her nine points. Her 15 rebounds and five blocks were tied for the second most in UC Merced women's basketball history. Lewis' efforts also put her ahead of Deja Jackson and into a tie with Marisse Jackson for ninth in program history with 291 career rebounds. She moved ahead of Adrienne Carmona for third in program history with 50 career blocks.
Damilola Sule extended her double-double streak to seven games with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sule shot 71% (5-7) from the field.
Tiffany Nguyen added eight points and dished out five assists for the second straight contest.
Faith Mucheru recorded her first career field goal. Linsy De Leon, Malaikah Kashif, and Gabby Martini made their Hostetler Court debut.
In a game in which both team held double-figure leads, the contest opened with six lead changes in the first eight minutes and it was Park Gilbert who grabbed the first two-possession lead at 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Park Gilbert went up by as many as 12 points midway through the second quarter before the Bobcats closed the half on a 16-3 run to head into the intermission tied 31-31. Ramirez had eight of her 15 total points in the surge.
Farris opened up the second half with a bucket to give the Bobcats their first lead since the first quarter. Two more Farris makes put the Bobcats up 38-31, a 19 point swing from trailing by 12 points to going up by seven points in less than seven minutes of gametime stretched between two quarters. However, Park Gilbert responded and grabbed a seven-point lead of their own at 51-44. A Lewis foul shot followed by a Nguyen three-point field goal helped the Bobcats narrow the gap to 52-48 by the quarters end.
The two teams traded buckets and leads early in the fourth quarter. Head coach Kellie Bernard's team took the lead for good with a Sule basket at the 4:19 mark, 59-58. Sule's basket was the start of the 15-0 game-winning run. Sule had six points in the run, while Farris had eight including her dagger three-pointer.
UC Merced finished the night shooting 37% (22-60) from the floor, 27% (7-26) from downtown, and 75% (21-28) from the foul line. The Bobcats 21 free throws were their most since February 23, 2019. Also of note, the Bobcats assisted on a season-high 16 of their 22 field goals.
UC Merced outrebounded Park 40-28 and forced 19 Buccaneer turnovers.
