Bobcats Extend Winning Streak to Eight Games With Win Over USK

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's basketball team won their eighth straight game and closed out a season-long four game California Pacific Conference road trip with a 74-60 win over University of Saint Katherine on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bobcats (14-7, 8-0) matched their best start in program history first coming in the 2015-16 season. The Bobcats are the third team in league history to start 8-0 multiple years, joining former Cal Pac members Menlo College and Holy Names University.

Mikayla Mabie led the way with a season-high 18 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Mabie played all 40 minutes and shot 56% (9-16) from the floor. Saturday marked her fourth conference game of the year scoring in double figures while dishing out at least five assists.

Damilola Sule finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Cierra McClain buried a season-high three triples en route to 12 total points herself. Sule scored in double figures in all four games of the road trip.

McClain also added three assists and passed Leticia "Moses" Oceguera for eighth in program history with 136 career assists.

Rainah Smith neared a double-double with nine points and nine assists.

Marisse Jackson grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds in the victory, ten of which came on the offensive glass.

Other individual notables include seven points each from Jackson and Deyliana Lewis, four rebounds from Haylee Owen, and four assists from Madison Hotchkiss.

The Bobcats led for the majority of the night and grabbed their advantage after Mabie scored the team's first eight points. She would finish with ten points in the first quarter to help the Bobcats garner a 16-11 lead.

UC Merced and Saint Katherine traded baskets the majority of the second quarter, resulting in a 34-34 tie heading to intermission. Six different Bobcats scored in the frame. Sule led the way with six points.

The Bobcats broke the game open midway through the third quarter with a 15-0 run that spanned over four minutes of game time. Sule sparked the surge with four straight points and combined with Lewis and McClain for 13 of the 15. The run put the Bobcats up 54-40 and they would lead 60-45 heading into the final frame.

The Bobcats lead grew to as many as 21 points, 68-47, early in the fourth quarter after a pair three-pointers from McClain and a layup from Mabie. The Bobcats led by 18 points with two minutes left.

UC Merced finished the night shooting 39% (30-78) from the floor and 63% (10-16) from the foul line.

Head coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery won her 99th career game, 55th in Cal Pac play.

Up next, UC Merced returns home to host Pacific Union College on Tuesday, February 15 at 5:30pm inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
