Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. - The University of California, Merced women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game and set two new program records in a 95-30 road win over Cal Maritime on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Bobcats (12-7, 6-0) have matched their best Cal Pac start in program history originally set in the 2015-16 season. The Bobcats are one of just two Cal Pac teams to start 6-0 in the last five years, joining Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The Bobcats 65-point margin of victory bests the previous record of 61 points in the road win at Pacific Union College over the weekend. The Bobcats have set a margin of victory record in three straight games. The Bobcats average margin of victory throughout league play is now 41.5 points, heightning their chances at setting a new Cal Pac record by the time the year comes to an end.
Head coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery's team also set a defensive record against Cal Maritime, holding the Keelhaulers to just 30 points which is the lowest scoring total for a UC Merced conference opponent in nine years of existence. UC Merced held Cal Maritime to just a 22% (9-41) field goal percentage and forced 37 turnovers. The Bobcats previous opponents scoring low was 33 points on January 7, 2016.
Offensively, the Bobcats 95 points Tuesday night tied the second highest scoring output ever in a conference game.
Damilola Sule led three Bobcats in double figures with a career-high 23 points off the bench while shooting 92% (11-12) from the field. She also grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, ten of which were on the offensive glass. Her 16 total rebounds ties the program's single-game record also held by Kayla Polman (1/17/13) and Mia Shannon (1/6/2018). Sule also joins Shannon as the only two players to go for at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a Bobcat uniform. The Bakersfield, Calif., native's shooting percentage was the highest in program history with a minimum of 10 makes.
Haylee Owen finished with 16 points, four steals and three assists. She splashed four triples en route to her tenth double figure scoring effort of the season. Owen's four steals shared game-high with Mikayla Mabie and Tiffany Nguyen.
Andrea Rogers was the third Bobcat in double figures and needed just 12 minutes of action to tie her career-high of 15 points on 64% (7-11) shooting.
Rainah Smith pitched in eight points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and held game-high with four assists. Smith eclipsed 700 career points in the game. She also passed Mia Belvin for third place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 535 career rebounds. Smith has grabbed 10+ rebounds in a career-best four games.
Mabie recorded eight points, four steals and three assists. She now has at least three assists in ten straight games and at least three steals in five straight games.
Soana Afu and Marisse Jackson blocked a shot.
The Bobcats never trailed on Tuesday night and led by double figures for 33 of the 40 minutes. Hopkins-Chery's team led by at least 30 points for the final 25 minutes, at least 50 for the final 14 minutes ultimately culminating in a game-high 65-point advantage when the final buzzer went off.
There were four stretches during the game in which the Bobcats scored ten unanswered points. The Bobcats biggest run came in the second quarter, a 21-0 run that lasted approximately seven minutes of gametime. The Bobcats surged for a 17-0 run in the third quarter that pushed the lead north of 50 for the rest of the game.
UC Merced allowed five points or less in the second quarter and fourth quarter.
The Bobcats high-tempoed style of play, along with grabbing 28 offensive rebounds and forcing 37 turnovers, allowed them to get off a program-record 95 shots. The Bobcats hit 40 of them to finish with a 42% field goal percentage.
The Bobcats outrebounded Cal Maritime 55-23.
Looking ahead, UC Merced travels south to play Westcliff University in Irvine, Calif., on Thursday, February 10. Tipoff from the Jordan Lawley Facility is scheduled for 6:30pm.
