Sule Makes History, Bobcats Beat PUC 64-46

Box Score

ANGWIN, Calif. – Damilola Sule poured in a career-high 29 points and grabbed a California Pacific Conference single-game record 27 rebounds to lead the University of California, Merced women's basketball team to a 64-46 win over Pacific Union College on Thursday night.

The Bobcats (6-10, 6-5) get back over .500 in Cal Pac play with the win and have now won two of their last three road games.

Sule's monster double-double was her eleventh of the year and her 27 rebounds passes Alicia Porter's previous Cal Pac single-game record of 26 set on January 30, 2022. Fourteen of Sule's rebounds came on the offensive glass. Scoring wise, Sule's 29 points were the most any Bobcat has scored since February 8, 2020. She earned that mark while shooting 68% (13-19) from the floor. The sophomore also had one steal and one block in her second straight 20+ point effort.

Deyliana Lewis finished with 16 points on 67% (8-12) shooting and nine rebounds.

Tiffany Nguyen knocked down three triples to score nine points, while Paloma Ramirez pitched in eight points and eight rebounds.

Faith Mucheru recorded a season-high four steals. All five Bobcat starters had a steal each. Ramirez, like Sule, was credited with a steal and a block.

The Bobcats led wire-to-wire in the victory and opened up red hot. Following a 7-5 lead, head coach Kellie Bernard's squad finished the quarter on a 16-2 run to take a 23-7 lead into the second frame. Sule and Lewis each had six points in the surge.

The Bobcats also led by 16 points at 30-14 before PUC strung a stretch together to cut the margin down to eight points at intermission, 36-28.

Out of the break, Sule immediately got the Bobcats back in front by ten points and the double figure lead held the rest of the way. Sule would end up scoring the first six points of the third quarter, ultimately helping set the Bobcats up for an opportunity to grow their lead to 20+ points, which would occur with two minutes left in the period. Lewis extended the lead to as many as 22 points shortly after, 54-32.

A Ramirez field goal midway through the fourth quarter gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of the night, 64-41.

Overall, UC Merced finished the night shooting 41% (27-65) from the floor and 64% (7-11) from the foul line.

Sule and the Bobcats outrebounded Pacific Union 49-24 overall, 18-3 on the offensive glass.

Looking ahead, UC Merced returns home to host Cal Maritime on Saturday, January 21 at 5:30pm inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
