Box Score MERCED, Calif. – Damilola Sule dominated the game with 29 points and 27 rebounds to lead the University of California, Merced women's basketball team to an 82-67 win over Westcliff University on Thursday night inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (10-11, 10-6) win was their third in a row, tying their longest winning streak of the season. Head coach Kellie Bernard's squad is now 5-1 in their last six games overall.
Sule tied her career-high with her 29 points and 27 rebounds, and her 27 rebounds tied the California Pacific Conference single-game rebounding record that she set two weeks ago. In her seventh straight double-double and 16th of the season, Sule shot 59% (10-17) from the floor and a career-best 90% (9-10) from the free throw line. Sule's 16th double-double moved her into second place on the Cal Pac's single-season double-double's chart, passing Menlo College's Laurel Donnenwirth from the 2013-14 season. Now, Sule will look to get three more double-double's to pass Donnenwirth's record of 18 from 2014-15.
Deyliana Lewis stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. She shot 63% (5-8) from the floor and 70% (7-10) from the charity stripe.
Victoria Farris was good for 17 points and three assists, scoring in double figures for the tenth time this season and fourth time in the last five games.
Paloma Ramirez added 12 points and four rebounds.
Other individual notables include three assists from Tiffany Nguyen, two steals from Sule, and a block from Nia Smiley.
UC Merced's 82 points scored on Thursday night marked their second highest scoring output of the season. The Bobcats also outrebounded Westcliff 48-20, helping result in a victory.
UC Merced and Westcliff played to an 18-18 tie after the first quarter and were knotted up again 31-31 at halftime. Despite the two teams going into intermission tied, each team held a lead of at least five points in the first half. UC Merced held a first-half lead of seven points. Also of note, the Bobcats assisted on ten of their 12 made field goals in the first 20 minutes.
The Bobcats scored the first seven points out of the break, five of which coming from Sule to put her team up 38-31. The Bobcats advantage was between four and nine points for the next five minutes before Sule gave her team their first double figure lead of the night. Ramirez knocked down a triple in the final minute to make it 54-41 UC Merced, which is where the score stood heading into the final frame.
Lewis converted a three-point play to extend the Bobcats lead to 16 points on the first possession of the fourth quarter. UC Merced also led by 16 points at 61-45 and continued scoring at a rapid pace, ultimately scoring a game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter to handle Westcliff by a final score of 83-68.
UC Merced finished the night shooting 43% (26-61) from the field, 21% (4-19) from the three-point line, and 75% (27-36) from the charity stripe. The Bobcats free throw makes and attempts marked the team's most since February 14, 2019.
The Bobcats improved to 6-2 in the all-time series against Westcliff, winning five of six by at least 15 points.
Looking ahead, UC Merced will host University of Saint Katherine on Saturday, February 4 at 5:30pm inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
