Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

UC Merced Falls Twice on Day Two of the NAIA Water Polo Finals

MERCED, Calif. – The University of California, Merced women's water polo team fell 21-3 and 20-5 to Westcliff University on the second day of the NAIA Water Polo Finals on Saturday at the Aquatics Center.

The Bobcats (7-13) first loss to Westcliff came in a round robin match, while their second loss came in the semifinals to the same Warriors squad. With the semifinal loss, third-seeded UC Merced will play fourth-seeded Cal Maritime in Sunday's third-place match.

Hope Stokes highlighted the Bobcats efforts with two goals in each contest. Stokes, who spent time in the field and in the cage on Saturday, scored three of her four total goals while sporting the goalkeeper cap. Defensively, Stokes finished with seven saves. All seven of her saves came in the second half in the semifinals.

Viviana Luna added four goals herself with three of them coming in the semifinal game. Luna scored the game's first goal before scoring again in the third and fourth quarter. The freshman also had three steals.

Jacqueline Azevedo notched two steals and an assist throughout the day.

Paula Fernandez led Westcliff with eight total goals, while Florencia Donofrio finished with seven. Warriors goalkeeper Razaan Kotarche allowed just eight goals while recording 16 saves. Second-seeded Westcliff will play top-seeded OUAZ in the NAIA Finals Championship match on Sunday.

Westcliff controlled all 64 minutes against UC Merced. The squad hailing from Irvine, Calif., led UC Merced 13-1 at halftime in the round robin affair and 15-1 at intermission in the semifinals.

Positives that UC Merced can takeaway from the semifinals is scoring the games first goal and holding Westcliff to just two goals in the third quarter.

Up next, UC Merced plays Cal Maritime in the NAIA Water Polo Finals Third-Place match. Opening sprint is scheduled for 12:00pm at the Aquatics Center.
