Men's Basketball Falls to Holy Names University

Box Score

OAKLAND, Calif. - The University of California, Merced men's basketball team suffered an 84-57 loss to Holy Names University on Saturday afternoon in their final game of the Holy Names Classic.

Both of the Bobcats (2-3) opponents at this weekend's multi-team event were members of NCAA Division Two's PacWest Conference.

Head coach Kevin Pham's team, who was shorthanded at the Holy Names Classic due to injuries, will not face a NCAA opponent the remainder of the regular season.

Despite the loss, Mason Westlake led all scorers with 18 points and shot 50% (4-8) from the three-point line. Westlake, who has scored in double figures every game this year and at least 18 points on four occasions, also grabbed a season-high five rebounds.

Caleb Gilbert extended his double figure scoring streak to three with an eleven-point performance, while Onkar Sidhu stuffed the stat sheet with six points, six assists and seven rebounds. Sidhu has a trio of six assist performances already. No Bobcat had six assists in any regular season game last year.

Other individual notables include nine points from Zach Phipps, seven rebounds from Robert Benson and six from Jaron Mertle. Phipps and Benson also notched a steal.

Four of the five Holy Names starters scored in double figures.

The Bobcats found themselves having to play catch up early as they fell behind 9-2 within the first three minutes and 15-5 soon after that.

Pham's team responded to the deficit well, embarking on an 18-2 run to grab a 23-17 lead. Gilbert and Westlake combined for eleven points during the surge. Westlake hit a triple to put the Bobcats up 19-17 and Gilbert followed with layups the next two trips down the floor to make it a two-possession game with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The Bobcats were either leading or tied for the next three minutes before Holy Names ended the half on a 15-5 run and carried a 40-30 lead into the locker rooms.

Gilbert opened the second half with a dunk to cut the Bobcats deficit to single digits, however that was as close as it would get the rest of the way. By the time the Bobcats connected on their next field goal, they found themselves trailing 50-32.

The deficit was 22 points, 59-37, with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. It was at least 20 points for the final eight minutes of the night. The biggest deficit was 29 before Miles Winfree shaved two points off on the Bobcats final possession of the night.

Winfree earned the start in his collegiate debut and finished with four points and two rebounds.

UC Merced finished the day shooting 39% (24-61) from the floor, 37% (7-19) from downtown and 33% (2-6) from the charity stripe. Holy Names shot 50% (33-66) from the field and committed just six turnovers.

UC Merced's loss was their biggest since falling to UC Riverside on December 22, 2017.

Saturday afternoon was the first meeting between UC Merced and Holy Names since February 4, 2012.

Looking ahead, UC Merced takes on Vanguard University on Friday, November 26 in the Vanguard Tournament. Tipoff from Costa Mesa, Calif., is scheduled for 4:00pm.
