Chris Morikawa was the Bobcats top performer on the day as he tallied a career-high 20 kills in the first match and a three-set career-high 17 kills in the sweep. The sophomore is just the third Bobcat all-time to record 20+ kills in the match, joining the likes of the program's all-time kills leaders Cole Smith and Joseph Webb.
Morikawa's hitting percentages were also impressive as he hit .481 and .448, respectively in the two contests. On top of that, the sophomore had a career-high four service aces in Saturday's opener.
Due to his strong efforts behind the line Saturday, Morikawa jumped three spots on the program's all-time service aces charts and now is ranked seventh with 27 career aces.
Ryan Steele also hit milestones in the doubleheader. When he took the court for the fourth set of the day, the senior became the program's all-time games played leader and has now appeared in 258 sets over the course of his career. Prior to Steele, Matthew Pelfini (2015-18) had the most appearances to his name.
As always, Steele made the most of his floortime on Saturday and after posting 37 assists in the four-set affair, the Sacramento, Calif., native stuffed the stat sheet with 25 assists, nine digs, four kills and a block in the sweep. Steele has averaged over 8 assists per set in all seven contests this year.
The Bobcats middle blockers deemed productive against Park - Gilbert, including Emmanuel Egun who suited up just for the first match and was good for six kills and six blocks. Lincoln Smith filled Egun's role in the latter match and pitched in three kills without an error and a two blocks. Jacob Semon played both matches on Saturday and had five+ kills and two+ blocks in both. He had just two attack errors on a combined 20 swings.
Kainoa Ferguson continued his strong campaign and he broke the program's single-match record with six service aces in the sweep. Ferguson broke the previous record of four aces that was originally set by Cole Smith in 2017. The record Ferguson broke was the second longest standing record aside from Samuel Hala'ufia's 12 total blocks set in the 2014 season.
Other individual notables from Saturday include 13 total kills from Jared Guglielmana, 13 total digs from Zach Brill and eight total kills from Trevor Jurlina. Jurlina moved up the record book Saturday, passing Matthew Lostetter for sixth all-time on the program's all-time kills list. Jurlina now has 355 career kills.
