BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California, Merced outdoor track team started a busy April competing at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational hosted by California on Saturday.
The women's 4X100-meter relay team of Nneka Egbuziem, Clarisel Lopez Obeso, Julianna Luchsinger, and Joyce Nichet broke one of three program-records on the day by clocking a time of 49.70. The quartet took fifth in the field and won their heat.
Luchsinger set two more program-records later on. She bettered her own top mark posting a time of 17.32 in the 100m hurdles before finishing the day with a program-record time of 1:10.03 in the 400m hurdles.
The men's 4x100m relay team of Naseem Hassaan, Martel Fields, Noel Simon, and Adam Ammar neared a program-record clocking a time of 42.47 and took tenth in the field.
Other sprint team highlights include Fields' times of 10.92 in the 100m and 22.06 in the 200m. Lopez Obeso posted times of 12.65 in the 100m and 26.07 in the 200m.
The first event of the day was the 5000m run. Jonathan Chavez earned a fifth-place finish Saturday morning with a time of 14:50.44. Jorge Mandujano placed tenth in 15:51.02.
Joshua Riley had a strong showing in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:58.36, good for fifth in program history. Jalen Morales ran the same exact time as Riley, while Cole Rommelfanger recorded a time of 1:58.41. Also of note, Riley finished tenth in the 1 mile run in 4:22.42.
Leslie Aquino finished eighth overall in the 1 mile run in a time of 5:13.60. Later in the day, she ran 2:22.39 in the 800m. Kasia Holland bettered her No. 5 800m time in program history posting a 2:26.90 finish.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Derrick Pickrel (9:54.41) and Sharvin Manjrekar (10:03.6) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Up next, UC Merced will head to Southern California for the first time this season for the Bryan Clay Invitational (Apr.16-18) and the Cal State LA Twilight Open (Apr. 17).
